Hello all.

Its been a while, I just got my car back from the shop. I got a full side of body work done, and a new paint job, so ill be posting more. I really need to get it running now.It has been sitting for a while. Im having trouble starting it. At first id get a click, but no crank, or start. So it had been sitting for even more time. I dont get a click now. Please help. If possible, if there are ways i can troubleshoot to try and pinpoint my exact problem i would appreciate any help.

thank you,

Since you said you have let it sit for a while, chances are your battery has been drained. Recognize how the clicking was there at first and now it is not. Check your water level. If it is not fully covering the plates, add water. Make sure your battery is fully charged and make sure that your terminals are free of corrosion. Do all three of these and see what it does. Good Luck!

Hello all,

I topped off the battery water, one side was pretty much at the top while the other side was low. I gave it a 2 hour charge. When I came to open the door, the lap belt was working and the door bell was working. I put the key in to start and it did not crack. There was clicking sounds coming from the rely boxes at either side under the hood. Please help! Thanks very much in advance.

PS ways to troubleshoot to find out what the starting problem is would be a major help!

Hi,thanks for the post. Could doing this possibly mess up my starter if it is in good working order? Also I have the remains of an old alarm system hanging down under my steering colum this may be playing a part. One more thing, if I have the setup for a power antenna, and I removed the antenna will my car be affected at all performance wise(starting mainly)?thanks alot!

Isn't there a way to bypass the solenoid straight to the starter so I can test for sure if my starter is bad or not? I dont know where this solenoid would be located. Please helpthank you

the solenoid is the little canister attached to the starter

You should be able to use a jumper wire or maybe even a small wrench to bypass the solenoid. It is the smaller portion of the starter assembly, probably half the size of the starter. Touch the jumper to the connection of the small wire of the solenoid and the big wire on the starter. If it engages and your car starts or turnsover, you know that your starter is good. Then try starting it the normal way, if you can't start it the normal way by key, then chances are that you need to replace the solenoid, or something else interrelated to the starting system. Make sure you check your battery terminals for corrosion and that your battery has enough water.

it sounds like your battery. since the relay is clicking it seems like you're just under the necessary charge. try charging it again and trying it then.

Hey all,I was lookin under my hood and Im pretty sure i have located the solenoid, smaller cylindrical goldish peice, and the larger starter below it. I see some wires running beside them, but not sure which ones you are talking about. Is it possible to bypass the solenoid from under the hood or do i have to go under the car? Please help!thanks alot.

ps: if possible please be more specific with the two wires to bypass with. thanks

the solenoid wire is the smaller one that can be disconnected. the large wire is held on the starter with a nut. If there is no metal contact on the solenoid itself, you may need to disconnect it and insert some kind of jumper wire into the connection so that you can touch that wire to the nut on the starter. Backtrack, after you find a way to disconnect the solenoid wire, make sure that the wire you are using as a jumper is not connected to the wire attached to the solenoid, but the wire COMING TO the solenoid. Remember you are trying to bypass the solenoid to check your starter. It is easiest to do this from underneath the car, rather than under the hood. Good Luck!
