Good morning and Happy new year, I'm a newbie. Just bought a 1997 Q45 a month ago, and on new years eve, the car wouldnt start, it has a new alternator and battery. My question is where is the starter located? this is my first infiniti so i'm not familiar with the engine. any advice/suggestions, thank you.

Won't start? Are you saying the starter doesn't engage and rotate the engine. Do you hear the starter solenoid "click" - trying to engage?

What happens when the battery is jumped with suitable giant 00 gauge copper jumper cables from a running vehicle with an adequate battery?

The starter is on the drivers side of the flywheel - opposite from 90-96 Q.

Be thankful you don't have a Lexus LS400 as the starter is under the plenum [top of flywheel].

Thanks, for the reply. It sounds like it wants to turn over, but the wont. we tried to jump the car with cables still no luck. yes the starter will not engage at all. when we tried to jump the car with cables, it was doing the same thing, just clicking, with no turnover. is there a website that has a manual, so i can remove the starter.

What I would try is jumping the starter relay.... That can be done easy and will determine where the problem is.zerothread?id=216039

Use that thread to help you, the wiring diagram isnt going to be the same but the info in there is sage....

Let us know if you have problems getting the service manual and finding the appropriate wiring diagrams to proceed.

The wiring diagram was for a 90-96. I'll post the other diagram here in a sec.

Nothing a few course at a good votech school won't fix...........BSEE is overkill for most cars, at least for the next few years.

Is there a way for you to find out what exactly happend right before it failed to start the first time? That surely would point in some sort of a right direction.

Try removing fuel pump fuse located in the plastic box next to driver's left foot. Keep stroking withou depressing gas pedal until it cranks. This could be possible injection issues.

That is just one of the possible approaches, however, the question still stands: how did it all start?

I had that problem with my q when I first got it and installed the Alpine stereo system. Please make sure your battery terminals are clean and on VERY tightly or click click will happen. It freaked me out the first time it happened, my cables were on pretty tight when it happened to my 94q, but apparently, they were not on tight enough.....Peace,the silk the smooth the Jud

I always tap the starter with something solid while someone tries to start it if the cables and connections are tight but I only get a click. Usually if that is what lets it start, the starter is the issue. The brushes don't make good contact after a while and when you tap the starter it often rattles them enough to trigger it to spin. On that note, is there a rebuild kit with bushings, brushes, and bendix drive to rebuild my own starter or must I buy a rebuilt/new one?

Your better off to replace it, unless you like to do things two, three, maybe four times. The starter is a SOB to get to in my 94. My starter smooth cracked. I got one on ebay for 40 bucks. They retail around 200....
