Hi, hoping i can get some help with this issue i am having. For months with my I30 especially in the cold months when i tried to start it i would turn the car and you can hear it turn over and the RPM needled would go up stutter and drop back to zero when i turned the key and gave gas the RPM needle would go up again stutter but stay up now and the it would idle. Then one night i had to run out and when i tried starting the car no cranking with a whinging noise nothing would go so car sat a week before i tried again and at this point the battery died that i only had for a year. so car sat for 2 1/2 months until i could get it towed to Pep Boys (i dont usually use). They told me the battery was the issue so they replaced it on 3/1 and when i got home with car i turned it off and tried to start again it gave me the cranking and whining noise like the car was struggling to start still so i took it back...they than stated it was the starter that went so they gave me a brand new one after they messed up the diag the first time. now the car starts better but i am back at the issue with the RPM needle going up stuttering and dropping back to zero and me having to give it gas to fully start. Pep Boys said it may be an airflow issue, but any of you have any suggestions? Thanks for any given to me.

Welcome to NICO.

Any maintenance history? Is the CEL on? When was the last time you replaced the air filter and fuel filter? Have you ever cleaned the MAF sensor? If the filters are good, try disconnecting the MAF sensor before starting the car and see what happens.

thanks for the welcome.I havent replaced the air filter yet was going to do that on my next day off. Not sure where the fuel filter is,( if provided a diagram i know i could find it). i will try the MAF sensor when I check the filters. Also what does a bad fuel filter look like?

sounds like there was two problems..starter died and the RPM needle going up and then falling sounds like fuel pressure. I see where you say that if you give it gas the needle will steady itself out. My guess Fuel Pressure Regulator.

Fuel filter is to the left of the brake master cylinder on the firewall.
