i have a 1990 240 and when i start my car 99% of the time i have to hold down the gas and make it idle using the gas pedal. If the car hasn't warmed up and i take my foot off of the gas then the motor will turn off. After the car has warmed up a little and i take my foot off the gas it will idle around 400-500 rpm. If i just start my car and dont apply the gas the car immediately turns back off. BTW the car has a new alternator and starter, the battery is reading 12v, I visually checked fuses and none appeared blown, my spark plugs were new a few months ago, I do have one mismatched plug wire though but all are new. This problem started when the summer came and my car started running hotter. The idle gradually dropped over a few days to about week or 2 and now it only idles in the 400's. Please some help.

get a needle. Put it in the middle of the 3 wires comin off the tps' plug. Put the key in the #2 position but do NOT start the car. Test the wire against ground and you're lookin for it to fall about 0.45v - 0.55 with the throttle closed. You can loosen the two screws that are holding the sensor in place till it falls within the spec above. At WOT, it should ~4.0v.

There is a device mounted on the engine called an air regulator which islocated on the passenger's side of the engine, near the back, below theintake manifold. When the engine is cold and idling, the air regulatorallows additional air to flow to the engine thus maintaining a good idle. There's a good chance the air regulator is defective or the electricalconnections are bad. As for the idle speed when warm, it should be 700 RPM in neutral.

If you want to adjust the idle speed, warm up the engine first. Shut offthe engine and disconnect the throttle sensor harness connector. It'slocated on the passenger's side of the engine at the top in front of theintake manifold; easy to see. Start the engine and let it idle in neutral. The idle speed should be 650 RPM. If not adjust the idle speed screwlocated on the IAA unit. The IAA is next to the air regulator. You'll needa flash light to find it because it's not easy to see. After you've set theidle speed to 650, shut off the engine and reconnect the throttle sensorharness connector. Start the engine and now the idle speed should be around 700 RPM in neutral.

If you're still having the problem or you can't adjust the idle speed properly, the IACV assembly might need cleaning. There could be a lot of powderedcarbon in it which would prevent the AAC valve from moving freely.
