Hello,

i have a 1993 300Zx with a VG30DETT engine,

probably wanna upgrade the pistons and rods?

i would probably go with kyle at importpartspro.com and not get a headache (not to mention lots of stress) that i got.

Not necessary. '90's Nissan motors are straight beasts. You'll be near their threshold at 600hp, but a rebuild wouldn't be worth it unless you wanted 700+.

their rods are strong, and so are their crankshaft and small-block, but the pistons are the weakness - it's not forged.

600whp? a friend of mine cracked pistons and is having a rebuild.

to each his/her own, but i wouldn't do it. strong engine, i agree.

but i wouldn't tell somebody to do something i wouldn't do.

i wouldn't just buy that z1 pack and expect 600hp --- bearings are important, arp studs are a good idea also. upgraded radiators and oil coolers are also something you should consider.

i'm VERY surprised z1 didn't include a howe radiator as part of that package, AND an oil cooler.

Are the pistons really not forged? I'm pretty sure the crank/rods are. Regardless, forged pistons are good but they're not great. Ever hear a set on a cold start? They slap for a good 20 minutes lol.

You know how your buddy cracked his piston? If it was under normal use I'd be surprised but it seems more likely that he either overrevved/boosted or his motor was a little tired.

no, the pistons aren't forged, but the crank and rods are, you're correct sir.

forged pistons are almost a prerequisite for 600hp...piston-slap isn't for all forged pistons, for example, CP's are pretty good...JE's are notorious for piston-slap, on the other hand. and 20 minutes is a slight exaggeration

it's how you spec the pistons, anyway.

it's a strong engine, i think of it as a poor man's supra/skyline engine...but to double the power is asking a lot without rebuilding it.

Yeah, I see what you're saying, I'm just trying to point out that a rebuild is a ton of work/money and if you don't plan on pushing past 600hp, you might as well stay stock.

. Anyone who says a VG30DETT is better then an RB26 or a 2JZ is a little shortsighted, but it's still a pretty impressive motor. If only it were a bit lighter, I'd say it could be mentioned in the same sentence.

i apologize if i came across the wrong way.

i fully agree with what you're saying, car-nut.

i tried to do a rebuild, but it's crazy-expensive and very stressful - - - i went with a local machine-builder instead of let's say, Kyle over at ipp, and it is stressful because he's not familiar with nissan's.

i think you can run 500hp on a stock block, with good tuning, cooling (koyo, howe, etc.), and something like a water-spray system wouldn't be bad either.
