I have a 1993 240 conv and I need to replace the starter. I looked in my Haynes manual and it stated that I need to lower the transmission to take the starter off. Is this true? Is there another way? I have not lifted the car to look for myself yet.

You don't have to but it could help. I did mine with the transmission intact and only jacking the car up a little and removing the the passenger front wheel. It's a tight fit but very possible.
