I have a 1992 240 SE that suddenly quit starting. I checked the voltage at the battery and have 13 + and also checked the voltage at the main post on the starter and also had 13 volts

When my daughter turns the key, the voltage to the starter solenoid reads anywhere from 7 to 9 volts

Any ideas what could be causing low voltage to the solenoid ?

Thanks

I am really rusty on electrical but it sounds like some kind of voltage drop. I would check the interlock relay and ignition switch for voltage drop. or maybe the wire is grounding somewhere. test with volt meter for voltage drop along the line or maybe a test light or bypass with wire to see if volt drops disappears.

that is normal to see a 9volatage drop at the starter. anything less and it wouldn't crank. If there is a 9v drop across the starter and it's not cranking you'll need new starter.

i assume you mean the the wire is connected to the starter. i was assuming he had disconnected the wire going to starter before measuring voltage.

see the starter tutorial in my signature. if you have 12 volts with wire disconnected at starter you need to hit starter etc etc per tutorial
