How do I replace the starter on my s14? where is it? My car has been turning over slower and slower the last couple of days, and now it almost doesn't. I'm thinking it's the starter, but I don't know where it is. the search doesn't say, and someone posted dropping the transmission, I think that's a bit much, but I want to do it myself. I only have one shot, this is my only car and if it doesn't start, I'm screwed. can anyone help?

Well, if the s14 is anthing like the s13 the starter is located on the passenger side bottom of the engine block bolted on right close to the the transmission with a couple bolts. It's really easy to get to if you just put the car up on jack stands and climb under. My starter did the same thing a few weeks ago. I replaced it and now it's better than ever. Have the battery tested first though! Most auto parts places test batteries for free.

its not too hard. its held onto the bellhousing on the passenger side with 2 long bolts one on each side. then ther eis like one or two plugs or wires running off of it. easy to figure out

I didnt think there was that much difference between cars but my starter on my 1993 convert is located on the passenger side just above the oil filter and back toward the firewall. One bolt comes out the bottom but the other bold was a ******. That one I had to remove from the top of the engine all the way against the fire wall. It was down to far for a socket or wrench and when I used a breaker bar, I could only turn it an 1/8 of a turn.

AJ Before replacing the starter have your alt and battery checked at the autozone for free. The starter bran new is between $114 -160 and a rebuild you can get done for 90$with a 2 year warranty is the norm.

i think i used a deep socket for it from under the car. after the top bolt is lossened the rachet doesnt really catch so u might have to hold the socket with ur fingers then use the rachet

Now that location has been established make sure it isn't your battery! If you buy a new starter without testing the battery you will be right up crap creek without a paddle.

See if the car starts better when you jump it. If it does there is an electrical problem and it isn't the starter. (i had this problem too. I odn't know why it did it but it whent away when i did my SR swap)

'preciate it fellas! I'm gonna get up under there today and see if I can locate it. I'm not really sure what you mean by the bellhousing, though. I'll get it checked out before I buy anything, but hopefully I won't get stuck at autozone...

Which gets me to thinking, the other day I tried to jump my sister's car and it didn't work. tried hooking up the positives then negatives to ground, then both on the battery, and still no go. hmmm...

went to O'reilly's and had the charging system tested, turns out it's not the alternator, battery, or even the starter they said. they said try changing the cap and rotor (simple tune-up). what do you guys think? is it easy to do?

It sounds to me as though your starter is going bad, they tend to go around 100,000 miles or so. If you have any mechanical inclination at all, trust your instincts. If you have an auto, the starter is a little trickier to get out. I had to support the transmission and disconnect the transmission mount in order to get enough play to get the starter removed. Good Luck

I replaced the cap and rotor, no dice. so I got the starter, and you guys were right, it was the starter. at least the cap and rotor needed to be changed anyways, only 35 bones. starter was about 125, and I put it in myself! makes me happy as hell, I fixed my own ****. it was a ***** though, not a whole lot of room. but thanks for the replys!
