So, my starter just crapped out on me and I'm gonna get into the process of replacing it. I wanted to know if there was anything other than tools and things like that and the actual starter that I needed to get to replace it.

Thanks for any help.

It is really easy. The starter was probable the easiest thing on my Z to replace (besides the fuel filter). Just don't let it drop on your wrist like I did.

Can anyone tell me what this replacement entails, I mean I've heard that you have to have the car up on a jack and remove the exhaust. I've only replaced starters on four bangers, so this seems like it would be a little more difficult. Thanks for any responses guys.

Ive been told by many technicians that if your going to replace the starter, you might as well replace the flywheel (flexplate). since your going to be there, I think alldata has a starter replacement on this vehicle as a 4-6hour job, so most techs can probably do it in like 2-3 hours, but I am no expert so don't quote me lol......I also might need to replace my starter and I will do my flywheel if it is a wise choice....

I won't be replacing the flywheel this time around, I can't afford it at the moment. Is that "4-6 hour job" including the flywheel replacement?

Another thing that I have heard it that if the starter is grinding like mine is, the flywheel could be wore down. Since my car can push start and run just fine this wouldn't be a problem of mine would it???

it's a huge PITA on the turbo, might not be to bad on the n/a, the starter took me almost as long as the timing belt! I did not have a stubby 12mm, 3 sawzall blades later....I had one less full length 12mm but I got the starter in!

You know what, can anyone simply offer a walkthrough of replacing the starter? It would be greatly appreciated.

Wow, you guys are making it sound like one of the hardest things to do. It took me 45minutes when I was 16.

1. Jack the car up2. Remove starter cover3. Remove a couple electrical connections4. Remove three 12mm bolts holding the starter on5. Starter will come off

Must be easier on the N/A then.....since what I quoted was what alldata has listed as time to replace it on the TT, but I have not changed mine yet, might be as easy as you say...In fact I really hope it is lol

It should be the same on the N/A and TT, as there should be nothing in the way of the starter on the TT as there is nothing in the way on the N/A.

disconnect the battery first to keep from shooting sparks in your face while under the car, on the TT the downpipes are right in the way. you can get ti without pulling the exhaust but your movement is severly limited and you have to wrestle it out

Thanks for the responses, but a bolt had just fell out from holding the starter in place. I didn't even touch the starter when I looked up under the car. I push started the car and got it up in the air and took a better look at the starter and touched it and sure enough it wobbled around. Looked closer and there was a bolt missing. Put the starter in place and bolted it back in place, lowered the car and it started up fine.
