Starter question?

on the starter solenoid there are the batt connection the ground and there is a plug that goes to the harness, is this plug connected to the ignition switch to actually get the starter to start.

so should this wire be hot when i hit the key?

Yes... If you have ever jumped the solenoid, you touch the 2 together with a screwdriver. The second wire acts like a remote.
