I thought I was going to have to spend $150 bucks on a new starter. The problem I was having was that every now and then I had to hit it to get it to crank.

I decided to take out the starter and open it up and see the guts of it. I found that the solenoid contact points were full of crud and the starter had allot of crud and carbon deposits all over. I cleaned it, especially the solenoid's contact points and then took it to AutoZone to get it tested. They said it was bad, no good. I then took it to Checkers and it passed there. Seeing that Checkers had a better, more modern system to check starters I took their advice on it. It had passed.

I installed it on the car, and no problems as of yet. It cranks great and even sounds healthier.

So I saved $150!!!

Now... where am I going to spend those $150!

1 pass out of 2 is not exactly a good thing. get a third test....or just buy the new starter man, it might work now, but who knows....

You don't want to be stuck in a bad place when your starter goes.

a lot of the times it isn't the whole starter. It could easly be the silinoid in the starter. Mind unfortunitly was an abused car so it was the whole starter

BTW there is a better starter out but it's not avalable in america yet due to no one buying it

I'm surprised that you didn't mention how damn hard it was to get out the stock starter. I just replaced the starter on my 93' s13. I tapped the starter with a little hammer for about 2 weeks before hitting it no longer got it to crank. It took me and 2 gearhead friends 2 hours to unbolt the starter whose bolts are wedged in so tightly between itself and the firewall. It cost me about $180 after returning the old starter core at Advance Auto.
