My wifes 97 D21 KA24e engine threw a rod a few months back since then I got what I was told to be a 91 KA24e out of a pickup. I swapped over all the 97 componnets to the new block, Now here is problem. I am trying to track down a Starter for the truck by finding out the 97 starter we had will not fit due to the block I got has a bump out at the bell housing which is interfering with the solenoid location of the starter. I was told that this motor came out of a 91 pickup, however the castings on the side of block say Japan and the origional motor that threw the rod is stamped Mexico. From the research Ive found the Japan cast blocks came out of 240sx and the Mexico cast blocks were primarily D21 motors. So I am unsure if this IS indeed a truck motor.

I have 2 questions:1. what years 240 KA24E starters are the same?2. Is there any way to find out the engine year from the casting numbers? here are the numbers if so... KA24 038784W

All years of 240sx had the same starter, from 89-98, KA-DE and KA-E. The truck KA and the 240sx KA motors have different starters though, so you must have a motor from a 240sx. I bet a starter for any year 240sx will solve your problem.

The thing is the 240 starter is mount holes are threaded and has 3 bolt holes. The truck starter has 2 holes and they are not threaded they go thru and thread into the transmission bell housing. the other thing I noticed is that it has a cast spot coming off the engine where the starter mounts and the original 97 motor did not the starter just bolted to the bell housing. Im confused and have had no luck finding someone who can decifier the casting numbers on the block so at least I will know exactly what Im dealing with.

Still having issues finding a starter for this motor. It is a Japan cast block and has a cast spot for the starter. I have it bolted up to my manual transmission from the D21. Does anybody else have this block because the old block did not have a cast area at the starter it just bolted into the transmission bellhousing. I have been thru a metric sh*tload of starters from 89-up and have yet to find one that works with this configuration.Heres a pic of it...
