Hey guys new to here,

I just finished swapping out the auto transmission in my 92, i went to start it and the starter just kept spinning. I took the starter off to see if it was bad, but its fine. I then decided to measure the distance the gear traveled and it should hit the fly wheel. The only problem i'm having is that the fly wheel teeth are sitting at the tip 5/8 in, the starter only goes in 1/2 to the tip of the gear in. I never took the fly off the motor so i dont see how it could have moved. The starter does not even touch it. Any thoughts? Thanks guys.

Hey, I don't know about auto-trany's but their is a difference between the five-speed non-turbo and turbo trany's. Did the new trany come out of a turbo? The starter mounting area on the TT has extra metal built up. This gives the starter the right clearance for the slightly bigger flywheel. I don't know why it would be bigger on the automatic but that is what it sounds like. Inspect your old trany with the new one. I hear grinding the extra meat off is possible but you have to get it just right.

on the older Z's the auto used a spacer to pput the flexplate where it needs to be, and when doing a 5 speed conversion you'd have to pull off the spacer, did you have a spacer behind your flexplate? and did you remove it? could also be the starter isn't pushing the gear all the way out?

I wonder if he did a conversion to 5 speed. I read it as swaping an auto with another automatic. I think by flywheel he meant flexplate. He said he "never took the fly (flexplate?) off the engine".

it was an auto to an auto. but i think that it might have come out of a turbo. should i just take it out and bring it back or just grind down that extra metal like you said. it is a depth problem so cutting the metal would work. thanks for the info guys
