Reading through the classifies looking at 240s(S13, there are a number of them that said to have new starters...so I was wondering if it was a common problem...

Cuz my 240 S13 stater was just fine about a weak ago and this week, it sounds like someone put some gum in it. In other words, its having a hard time cranking.

How long does it usually take to do a starter?

Mine takes a few cranks.. like 4-5 before it fires up. In the morning its a little more harder to start 'cause its cold.

i thought it was my starter too... but the free parking-lot/on car test was good & finally found out my fuel filter has clogged up a bit (after ~42k miles)

later on i had to put a new battery (after ~5 years) as well...

but it does take a few cranks too w/ my original 89 starter under colder climates (3-4)

thats normal. they usually make loud noises before they go out. the starter relay is a very common problem.

I have my S13 since new, and in those 11 years the only thing that had stoped "Negro" were the starter brushes (carbons) two times, but it was an easy and cheap fix about US$ 6 including parts (not OM) and LABOR, sounds weird, ehh? Here down the border Labor is incredibly cheap if you know what is wrong whith your car and hire and independent mechanic to follow your instruccions.

yeah, starter overhaul is a piece of cake but you have to be able to find the parts as i dont think nissan sells them.

Yes you don´t find Nissan parts on this, whath we did was to take some similar size brushes and cut & sand them by hand to fit originals.
