A few months ago, my car stopped cranking (was previously having starter issues). I just bought a reman. starter used from someone (still looks decently clean) and he said it started the car perfectly.

Well, I finally got the old starter off, and when I installed this one, now it just makes a popping noise. I also have a kill switch installed, and when I tried to make the ignition regular (i.e. direct key = start) it would make the popping noise and the car would die. I would have to disconnect the neg. batt. terminal and reconnect it for everything to cut back on. When I switched the ignition thing to make it use the kill switch/button, the starter just makes a loud POP noise. No whirring or clicking.

Everything seems to be tightened up and no corrosion. One thing that did catch my eye was that the black part that houses the connection was cracked.

Starter or ignition problem?

Never buy remanufuktured starters or alternators. Yes I spelled it that way on purpose. I think thats the issue is the starter itself.

Yeah, thats what Im leaning towards...now the only thing I have to decide on is whether or not to drop it off to my mechanic and be sure thats the problem, or buy a starter and hope thats the problem....but Im leaning towards just dropping it off at my mechanic, have him figure out the problem and while hes at it fix my timing chain for $250 while hes at it.

yeah I would definately see if the (used) one you have is salvageable but from my experience those are the 2 things that it's better to buy brand new. I am still using the original starter in my S14 and it's 10.5 years old now. At least your mech is hooking you up with the timing chain thing so that's good. Those are fairly simple but a PITA and tedious. Luckly I haven't had to do mine yet "knock on wood"
