I'm trying to save money by pulling my starter myself and changing the brushes. After numerous bouts of defeat and heroic come backs I have the car up on jackstands, I have the 2 bolts removed and the starter is sitting in there loosely.

My question is - will it ever come out? On top is the oil filter and exhaust manifold, below is the front axle, to the stern is the suspension and to the bow is the wheel well. It looks impossible, and my frozen fingers can't move it around any more. Will I have to put the starter back, tap it until it cranks, drive to the garage and spend 400 bucks? Ahhh! It's driving me nuts!

Also, there's a small wire with a bug red rubber boot on it hanging loose right next to the starter - could that be my problem?

Thanks for any help at all!

Do you have a copy of the factory service manual? Unfortunately NICO doesn't host the FSM's for the first generation Pathfinders.

I don't have the factory service manual. What would be easier to remove? The oil filter and exhaust manifold, or the front drive axle from the transfer case?

(both sound really bad)
