I just finished putting everything into the hatch, finished the wiring, hand cranked the engine to confirm spark and fuel, go to turn the key and nothing. I hear the clicks and I hear the starter extend and try to turn the flywheel but it won't. So I pull the starter and get it tested and it seems perfectly fine. I hook it back up hardwire it on and handcrank the engine to try and ghetto start it. It is way easier to handcrank it with the starter engaged than without the starter so I guess that means it's meshing up with the flywheel. Engine will still not start ... I'm lost

Well, you can do few things to verify the start/battery/wiring.

1) make sure your battery is fully charged otherwise your starter might act up and gives you false results.

2) if battery is good, make sure your engine is well grounded.3) verify that your thick black/red (I believe thats the color) wire on the start has constant 12V all the time.4) if all the above results are good, and your year the start extending. Remove the starter and try and visually inspect the teeth on the flywheel through the starter hole.Turn the crank by hand and inspect all the teeth.

Have your removed the flywheel before the engine installation?

Good luck,

thats the thing man. I went down that whole check list and the starter is good wiring is good it's getting proper electricity both the ignition line and the one straight to the battery, everything is grounded as well. I rotated the shaft by hand and inspected the teeth and they are all good, not even worn a bit. The teeth on the starter are good too. I bought the engine rebuilt as a set (that I assumed was complete but I've been hunting parts for the past couple of months) so I didn't rebuild it myself. I'm really starting to get worried about this motorset. Is there anything that would cause the flywheel to be too tight for the starter to turn but bot tight enough to prevent me from cranking by hand? the only other thing I can think of at this point is that he got a ca20e starter. Do the ca20e starters bolt to our blocks? I know we can use ca18de ones but do the ca20es work as well? I did some research and I guess the ca20e starter is the same as the ca18et one but not the same as the ca18de and det ones (all this according to parts sites on the net and clubs12). Wouldn't the starter turn the wheel if you hardwire 12v to activate it even if nothing else were on? the starter just doesn't turn the wheel.

edit: just found out the starter is the correct one by matching my part # inscribed on it with this post:

A good possibility that your starter might be fried. Your selonid on the starter is good as it is pushing the gear forward but the motor on the starter can be bad which results in not turning the engine over.

Also, if you bought the engine rebuilt, I don't know what kind of work they have done on it, but just verify that the flywheel is the correct one, look through the starter hole and verify that the flywheel is about 2 cmm thick.

Good luck,RafiPULSAR GTR

well it's not the starter, I swapped one from a ca18de and it didn't work so I guess it's something with the engine itself. I'm putting it in a shop because I need my car running. I'll follow this up once the car is running.
