I would give your wires a check. Something might be loose or have a cut along the way from the battery to the starter. Is your battery terminals nice, tight and clean?

I found out today what it was... The starters differ in sizes. i measured from the flange to the top of the gear. my auto starter measured 1 1/2 inches and the old one from a friend measured 1 3/4 inch. that was enough to throw the gear out far enough to crank the flywheel over. Thanks for all the help and hope someone can use this info.
