After getting everything tidied up a bit I ran into a problem. The starter does not want to fully engage the ring gear and thus makes an awful grinding noise.

I am using Wes's adapter plate. Has anybody else run into this problem. I'm not sure how to remedy the situation other than replacing (or spacing) the ring gear further aft on the flywheel (balance issues?)

Let me know.

Are you using the Z starter or the Q starter?

you'll have to use a spacer of sorts to make up the difference in plate thickness that spaces the trans out.

The starter issue is what superhatch said your probably using the wrong one, but the flywheel has to be shimmed anyway to take up space on the plate so make sure you did that otherwise youll have clutch problems.

Using the Z starter.

GS I'm not sure I understand your post. I used the factory Q flex plate spacer between the engine and flywheel. Wes's adapter is only 1/4 inch plate steel. are you saying there needs to be more clearance between flywheel and crank?

Yes i believe you have to stack TWO flexplate spacers between the flywheel and the crank. The spacers are 1/8 iirc. Looks like transmission drop is in your future.

DOH!!!

Are the flywheel bolts long enough to support that?

Anyone have an extra flywheel spacer?

if you use arp bolts they should be more than long enough.

I've got one of Wes's plates too and the starter placement appeared to be OK with the flywheel with only one spacer.

Maybe you could slot the holes in the starter to move it forward a bit to suit. Does the clutch disengagement appear to be right?

And Wes, what is the part number for the ARP bolts that you used, wouldn't mind getting some.

I used the stock bolts too. Although ARP might have been cheaper. I think I paid about 8.50 a piece from Nissan.

I am looking into slotting the bolt holes to move the starter forward. That is the Idea that I have been thinking about since I realized there was a problem.

Fixed. Just an alignment issue I guess. I had to grind a little bit off the adapter plate and it started up fine.

Thanks

glad to hear it got sorted...factory bolts were too rich for my taste and even having to buy two sets of arp ones was still much cheaper than oem.now get to work finishing up the exhaust and all that jazz and go pwn.
