I have searched but I have not found an answer. Does anyone know if the usdm ca18de starter will work with a ca18det? TIA

i havent heard that it will. plus its fwd so i would think the layout to be different.

if you dont have a starter i have a busted one somewhere you can get for 5$. if you have one id just sugest rebuilding it unless dee or someone has a spare lying around.

I don't see why not... same bellhousing and block. Only difference is the flywheel, so maybe it has a different # of teeth.

FYI: The Datsun 180B (610) one doesn't fit!!!

I had my first CA18 in my datto back in '93, and I broke the nose off two starter motors before realising this. Both were 'engine out' jobs to fix.

I think it was during this time I realised I was good at swearing.

I reckon the CA18DE FWD will fit.

Any CA20 or CA18 starter should work, the blocks are the same FWD or RWD.

I'm actually using my old CA20 starter on my SR20... Slightly modified.

The block isn' the only issue... it's the diameter and number of teeth on the flywheel. Also, it must mate with the bellhousing.

The FWD starter is longer..I now believe it may foul on the S13 DET plenum supports or engine mounts.

Found this pic on Ebay...talk about a coincidence.

Yes it works. Only difference is on the RWD starter, both holes are threaded whereas the FWD only one is threaded. The other one will need a longer bolt with a nut on the back of it. As for install, it's pretty easy. Just disconnect the battery, jack the front up, and remove the pass wheel. Remove two bolts, remove the starter. Simple as that.

to get it rebuilt shouldn't be more than $150 and that would bolt right back up and have a warranty.

did it have red valve covers? If so it was either the CA18 or CA16. not sure if they're interchangeable, but I would guess they are. there was also a GA16 that came in the pulsar, but it looks nothing like a CA.

the valve cover was off of the car, there was another '88 pulsar there that had an se emblem with a black valve cover but the motor i got this starter from looked different from that one... ill take a picture of the starter and try to post it later today

ok so i got a remanufactured ca18de starter from a 88 pulsar nx from napa and went to swap out starters. i tested it out before i put it in and it seemed fine but when i put the new one in it, the teeth wouldn't engage with the teeth of the flywheel. i could hear it whirring around but no catch. and i noticed before i put the new starter on that there were 2 washers. i put the washers on with the new starter and it made no difference still. anyone ever try this and why isnt this working?

i love how back and forth this thread is going.... the uncertainty of it all really anooys me. i work at advance auto parts, just picked up a reman DE starter. i will be putting it in tomorow. if i remember to take pictures i will.(if i dont get too frustrated with the swap out). its for a 88 puslar nx se. part number 17077 (AAP stocking number) i hope to make this thread perfectly clear and valid to the next guy who may wonder if its possible. i should have the pictures by tomorow night.

thanksSeamus

It would be awesome to have pics proving yea/ney, but IDK why people don't just get their's rebuilt/fixed. Generally it's just the solenoid that goes bad on them and can be fixed at any electric motor/generator shop for pretty cheap.
