So starter, starter relay, flywheel, and clutch all have been replaced and ive checked all the wires going to and from the starter and battery and relay and had the starter checked and it is in working order when tested yet it grinds occasionally. I have found that cleaning out the ignition switch actually helps it stop grinding for a few days but then goes right back to its old ways anyone see this before or have any other fixes because i feel like im losing my mind on this issue.

Check all cable connections for resistance............that one about the ignition making the starter grind, that's one as far from left field as I have heard in a while.

I'd be doing a CCA loadtest on that battery.

Just like with alternators today, a new starter could be an issue, the parts we pay for today are often junk out of the boxes. If somebody did not do a rebush on the starter shaft due to Chinese 'don't want to' then the new starter may be crap, it will work outside of the car all day long though.

^ Sadly, lots of truth to this, I had this happen on 2 alternators and a starter for my 540, new, out of the box, DOA.

You said the flywheel was replaced, was it replaced with a TT or NA flywheel. the TT is larger so if you have a TT car/trans and got an NA installed your starter gear isn't making full contact with the ring gear.

I put in a tt flywheel for my tt 300zx. So now the starter is only grinding on cold starts when i first get up in the morning but works all the time after the engine is warm. Any other ideas? Would it be a good idea to rebuild my oem starter that i pulled out or buy another oem for 375. :frown:

Hey, I had this issue. The new shiny brass starter bolt that I installed was like a millimeter too long and went "ZING ZING" on my flywheel, sounded terrible. Go under there and make sure your starer is secure, and change that bolt back to the old one if you just replaced it.

Thanks. We'll give that a try.

PLEASE TRY THIS TRICK

I have had the same problem guys and have tried every possible combination and fix for the starter and flywheel till .finally something worked! Unfortunately I still have to replace the flywheel it's all chewed up from the grinding.

I put the transmission into 5th gear. Pump the clutch 6 to 10 times and then start the car. It has not grinded one time since I start the car this way. Obviously for manual only.

If this doesn't work, try rocking the car forward and backwards pretty hard. That's what I did before I learned the 5th gear trick. And it would work also.

I hope this works for other people !!

Still doing it with the new starter from last March. I bought a relay that goes in the front wheel well.
