I couldn't find a post but I'm sure this is a familiar problem ...

- I went to start up the car this morning- At first, the starter caught for a fraction of a second but I didn't let it go- I tried again, and now the starter goes screeeeeee but the engine doesn't turn over- Over the past couple of weeks, I've had 2-3 troublesome starts

Any suggestions? Thanks

Starter solenoid. Bang on it while on a lift.

Can you suggest any links or articles that can help me with the lifting and banging part?

Also, am I correct in assuming that the long-term solution is to replace the starter motor? Thanks

Well, by "lift," he meant have the CAR on a hydraulic LIFT. As far as banging, you're going to want to bang the starter lightly. I'm really not sure where it is on a g50 but someone will probably chime in on it.

Yes - if it's semi -faulty, then replace it. What Maxnix suggested was 80% diagnosis and 20% band aid.

There are some article on percussive maintenance, most in IOM. If the car doesn't start, it's tough to jack it high enough to get sufficient distance for the back swing.

The other possibility that produces a similar symptom is that you have broken off all the teeth sequentially on part of your ring gear. Not very likely.

Starter motor most likely fine, but solenoid needs replacement.

Call Joe as they are on sale this month.

Careful a 15 year life is very good for a V8 starter depending on the number of starts per day.

Anything over 20-25,000 starts is suspect: 5 per day x 360= 1800 x 15 years = 27,000 starts.

Some people average only 6 miles per start, some 20, some a 100! so mileage is variable.................mine lasted 315,000 miles but 18 years. But 150k of that had 100 miles per start ...............all in all ~ 20,000 starts.
