starter cranks and keeps cranking.

Hello and thank you for your interest in my first post.
I just installed a new starter (for the second time. First one I Bought was defective so I exchanged it for this one) I turn the key and the starter won't stop cranking even after the key is turned all the way off and taken out of the ignition. Had to pull the battery cable to get it to stop. Engine never starts, just "duh gi duh gi duh..." sound I'm assuming is coming from starter.
