Starter solenoid sticking?

We had something like that in the enigne in our boat. We had to hit the solenoid with a mallet to get it to "unstick" itself...

Try replacing the starter relay. A lot of times (at least on Hondas - I know no comparison), a bad starter can increase the load on the relay and cause it to go bad along with the starter. It's a good idea to replace both (again at least on Hondas) at the same time. Maybe you should give it a shot.

Are you using oem starters as replacements or national chain junk?

New oem starter, it does have a shorter drive gear, hirh torque, my mechanic who happens to be a personal friend assures me there are no wires grounding out, car is going in tomorrow for new fan blade and some new bearings in idler pulley, he said he would look further into my startee issue. It had not made any foul noises in 1 week then pulling out of a gas station this morning at approx. 30 degree grade heard the ***** scream for a second.

By OEM you mean factory? The shorter drive gear and higher torque makes me think that it's new, but not OEM. I think you just found your problem.

The other option is that maybe you're hearing your ilder pulley locking up and mistaking the sound for the starter???
