did the search & read the threads; still do not understand. once in a while on start up the starter sounds like when you turn the key to start with the engine already running. scares the bejesus outa me! then it will fire off as usual. i fear i'm doing some harm to the flywheel. when my ratty old ford p.u. does that i know its time for a solenoid and a bendix. but this is a 96QT W/107k miles and always dealer maintained. im 2nd owner and need to diy whatever i'm able. i have the fsm but no tsb,s. need advice. thanx to all.

Have you checked the starter relay?

thanx for reply mannix, i sure enjoyed the music scene of austin way back in the 70,s. anyway, i re-read some ''starter'' threads and rather convinced it is the pinion on starter not fully engaging flywheel that,s causing the ruckus. is that the same thing as a ''relay''? i'm unable to boot up my fsm disc so i'm running on swag. am i doing potential damage to flywheel ? i'll check the area for a reputable re-builder in my area(not likely).

my 96q has done this since it had about 20,000 miles on it ! dealer could never duplicate the problem whenever it was in for service, despite me complaining about it every time it went in for any service- dealer finally had it happen when in for an unrelated repair at almost 100,000 miles- factory declined to cover it- car now is at 173,000 miles without repair and still occasionally grinds-will wait till transmission needs replacement one day,as they said flywheel and starter needs replaced to stop the grind, which entails transmission removal, exhaust drop,etc-I will bundle the labor and I am sure removing the 10+ year old exhaust will create even more expensive repairs

A relay is an electrically actuated switch. It gets a signal to either beak or create the circuit .Nissan relays tend to be around 1"x1"x 2" in shape. You can find a bunch in the relay box in the engine compartment.

Since you mentioned "disc", I'm assuming that you don't have the pdf FSM on your computer.

it is not the relay causing the grinding-it is starter/flywheel gear engagement problem-one or both will need replacing{heard there were numerous 96 with flywheel replacments due to being bent or warped-not sure how that happens.

well allright, well ok, guess i'll start with a rebuilding existing unit. oh wait a moment, i forgot where i am for a sec. there are no rebuilders anywhere between key west & homestead. oh well the options are, (1) buy reman locally(always a poor choice), (2) reman from infin of scots. OUCH! (3)ignore and drive on untill? any thing i'm missing?

make sure to have the flywheel inspected, otherwise the new starter will soon display the same grinding- very expensive to R&R transmission, exhaust, and replace flywheel and starter!
