Start of my 1jz build

V8 240sx? Sure! If either the chassis OR the engine is non-Nissan (i.e. SR20 in an RX-7 or LS1 in a 240sx), we've done it.

Been here a while, been workin' on my project over the last month or so. Single'd 1jz, r154 tranny, gt40-88 etc.

I've been planning to do a 1j'd s13 for the longest time, I had mount kits, wiring everything sitting here just waiting to buy the engine. But at that point, my buddy got sick of taking this car from shop to shop and getting it screwed up. So I bought it from him, sold my parts and started gettin' dirty.

Still got a long way to go with this, waiting on more parts to arrive. Gonna pull engine, paint bay, gotta get new carpet, install turbo timer, boost controller, etc.

Here's the work I did over the past weekend. Car is a black hatchback

Stripped interior

There were termites everywhere. Scubbing bubbles > termites.

Foamed up dead spaces

Sanded it all down, then wiped it down with lacquer thinner

e-dead v3 sound deadening paint. This stuff has the consistency between JB Weld and cake frosting

Cake's done!

Gauge pod I'm finishing up

Best damn part of the car

Ignore the wiring. I've got another harness that's going in. MTR butchered that harness, along with the turbo and a few other things.

I've got Evo Brembos going on the car, along with some new rims, 180sx body parts, and too much more to list.

My daily / parts donator (once I get my company vehicle):

As of 11/2/08

Gauge pod almost finished, can see a few small imperfections. I'm too much of a perfectionist for my own good.

Here's what my calipers look like so far:

Supplies:

Before:

(I forgot to take pictures of it stripped)After:

Adapter brackets:

Some work to the car, mainly got it ready to pull. Gonna order the engine bay paint soon. Took out the harness, disconnected hoses, took off turbo, downpipe etc

George workin hard

Nice, what kind of setup do you have planned?

Got another update for ya:

Got a lot of work done today.

My roommate working on takin' manifold off

Tools

Engine puller / forklift

Here she comes

Dirty damn engine bay

After some scrubbing bubbles - that's me with the hose

Sanded ready to paint. I ended up using epoxy appliance paint. It's reallly tough stuff, ever tried scratching the finish on a refrigerator? I tried chipping some of this paint on a test piece earlier in the day, it takes some force to even scratch it a little.

dang, good stuff so far, thanks for your help on my thread, but im thinking if ill be spending pretty much 5k i`m leaning towards the ls1 even though with the 1jz you can just turn up some boost and minor stuff and you got yourself a rocket

does the 1j have forged internals like the 2J? besodes displacement, whats makes the two motors different?

Thanks for the compliments.

I'm not sure about the forged internals. I'll have to check that out.

Other than displacement, there isn't much difference. A lot of the parts are interchangeable: rod and main bearings, valves, seals, injectors, head gasket, pistons, water pump etc. The heads are completely interchangeable as well.

Here's a good list of 1j / 2j parts FAQshttp://www.supraforums.com/for...92754

Best thing for cleaning engines:Scrubbing bubbles

Ngibson's Gauges
What process did you use when useing the Scrubbing bubbles?Did you just follow the directions on the can or a special technique??

I like the way your gauge pod came out. But no radio?

Also I don't have proof but I have heard the "rumors" about stock JZ forged parts but from what I read on the JZ and Toyota forums those rumors are false.

Just spray it on, it usually lifts most everything off but on thicker grease I use an old toothbrush. Then hose it down.

The radio will be mounted in the glove box, I always use my mp3 player in my car. Can't stand regular radio so no real need to see it all the time.

Now I'm going back and forth on rebuilding my gt40, or going with gt28 twins.

Wow that is easy!

But going twin GT28s is serious money! What is your power goals with this project?

For stuff that is caked or burned on, you need a heavier duty degreaser though. I use scrubbing bubbles on engine bays, a lot of the heavier degreasers can fog up clear coats and paints. Depends on the paint though.

But twin gt28's would be so baller, with 500+ rwhp at lowww rpms.

If I get mid 500's I'll be perfectly happy with the setup. I'll probably be on around 18 pounds for daily, 22 when I wanna kick some *** on the high way haha.

Got a bunch of work done today.

My dad build this box over our toolbox a few weeks back. Just got this light installed, made a huge difference

Painted the block - semigloss black

This is the best thing you can do for yourself when working on any project, buy a box of ziplocks and a few sharpies.

My diagram for removing headbolts / camshafts

Not too dirty, nothing worse than can be expected from a 10+ year old engine

I had almost **** myself when I saw this

Then I realized it was from me not taping the intake ports off well enough, and was just water from me hosing it down.

Six cylinders bishez!

New headgasket installed

Time for a Dew break

My drawing was less detailed than needed, so I printed out portions of the fsm.

Dropped the oil pan. The lower portion has a bigg dent in it. And I felt the need to reseal it all, and paint bomb it.

Update!

Got a bunch of work done today:

ARP Head installed

Less dented oil pan arrived

2jz water pump pulley from OHRLY

When I was removing the head bolts I broke an extension in the tool, after fighting with it to remove the broken piece I just bought another one.

Headstuds in and cams reinstalled

Painted timing cover

Cleaned and painted fuel rail

Installed 2jz injectors

Removed timing gear to install new front main seal

New front seal, painted lower cover, timing belt installed

sandblasted and painted oil cooler tubing

Dirty alternator

All cleaned and installed

Here it is at the end of today

Clear timing cover

New cam gears

Installed

Cover reinstalled

Blitz!

Drew out my mounting template

Do work!

Cut out

The mounting hardware

Clamp it up to bend, used a rubber hammer to bend it over nice and flat

This is where it's going to be mounted

I had to bend it some more to get the angle I wanted, here it is bolted in, and this crazy strong double sided tape to hold it on

They sure will. About 90% of the parts are interchangeable, he can use 2j bearings, rods, pistons, wrist pins, oil pan, waterpump etc. Cams however are not interchangeable.

Look at this thread, you might have to registered to look thoughhttp://www.supraforums.com/for...92754

2jzswap.com. You mail in your ka harnesses and the jz harness. They match em up, connect all the necessary wires and leave the ones tagged that you need to hook up to the chassis. Very clean job, they recover and retape the whole harness too.

Removed the uncracked dash

Sparco wheel

Dash reinstalled

Removed these ugly bastards

Plate to mount my TT and Boost controller

Extended the TT wires into the harness

Went and picked these up for power distribution, top for power and bottom for ground.

My roommate came up with a good idea for once

Why do you think it looks awkward, if you don't mind me asking.

I like it, saw one on another s13 at one point - wasn't as nice as mine, but I liked the idea a lot. I was going to put them on the A-pillar but I didn't want to worry about getting them stolen.

I didn't do much today, I'm still waiting on a lot of parts to come in.

Installed the shifter extension

Mounted intercooler

The holes for the piping has been bothering the hell out of me, so I fixed it.

Cut cardboard template

The material

Bend it down with a big #$^&ing hammer

Riveted in place. I forgot to take pics of the other side. I also treated that rust, rubber undercoated the bottom and spray painted the top.
