it only happens on a cold start but this grinding noise is pretty consistant. i go to fire her up and when it's cold it not only takes longer(3-4 seconds as opposed to the 1-2 it should take) but half way through it stops turning over makes a nasty grind noise then fires up. i have a new battery and i don't think it's the starter. the only problems the car currently has( i don't know if theses effect the starting or not) are leaky power steering lines, a slow leak but a leak none the less. and some hose that sits right under the intake box. mechanic seems to think i need some specialist to have that replaced. 200$ ish which sounds like a load of crap but idk. so any ideas as to what this grinding could be is greatly appreciated. thanks~ben

If the grinding occurs while you are still cranking on the engine i would say it is the pinion on the over running clutch on the starter motor. At least you should hope so because it not that gear it would be the teeth on the flywheel. If it occurs after the engine has started it couldnt really tell you what it is. On my 240(89 sohc) it grinds for about a second after the engine has started then stops. I dont know what that is though. Hope this helps in some way.

well, nelson8708's problem is the bearings in the starter, it will make a grinding, shreiking noise after the car starts because the starter now has to stop spinning, the bearings are done. you will have to replace the starter soon.

now for eastcoast chaos, there are only 2 things that contact each other when the motor is trying to start, there is the starter and the flywheel. sometimes when the problem lasts too long, you will end up damaging both peices.
