Basically, my car hates starting. Rather, its really whiney about it when I ask it to. Whenever I'm gone for an hour or so, it's just fine, but when I leave it off for less than 30ish minutes (including the 2 when I go into the Quickie for a Fanta) it starts and then the revs just fall to nothing. A little gas and its okay as long as I get rolling quick. I backed out of the space at the Quickie and going from R to 1 it dropped all the way to 500rpm (normal startup idle is roughly 1400, falling to 1000 within a minute or two, and then after a little driving 800 is normal for idle), and obviously barked at me because that's well below normal, but I got rolling and it was fine, a little low for the next stop a few seconds away at the stop sign turning onto the street, but nothing big. By the time I had driven for 10 seconds to the next stop sign, it was just about right on target. What would make it not start right after short off-times? Fuel injection, pump, ignition stuff? Those are my only two guesses at this point, but with those I would expect a problem no matter how long I left it, and I would expect it to be worse when I leave it for long periods... What's going on?

If I have the AC on (my mom was in the car one day, so I didn't just put the window(s) down) the car drops to just 100-200rpm but doesn't shut off, then goes back to 800 like normal... what the heck is going on? If a mod could move this to the Nissan Mechanic Section it would be totally awesome! Thanks!

After a few days of changing temps, I've figured out that it's cold starts that truly suck. I've heard of what is wrong with cars when they are crappy with cold starts, but I can't remember what it is. A move to the Mechanic section would be helpful, thanks!

first pull the intake tube off the throttle body and check for carbon build up around your throttle plate. if its there clean it real good with carb cleaner and a tooth brush. make sure you only use a nylon brissled brush no metal brissle brushes cause you'll scar your throttle chamber. if this does not resolve it. you need to set your base idle. do this by warming the car to operating temp shut it down disconnect your tps (left side of your throttle chamber, brown and gray connectors) restart the car your idle should be very low at this point. between intake runners 1 and 2 there is a large screw adjust that screw to bring your idle up to between 650 and 750 rpm target is 700 then shut the car down and reconnect your tps. if you follow this procedure you should not see a check engine light. following this procedure is also how you set your base timing. If you feel like checking it do it right after adjusting the idle screw. should be 20 degrees btdc.

It's weird, the car is just kinda fixing itself. It was cold last night and it started up without a groan at all, went right to my (apparently a little odd) normal idle of 800. Maybe it was getting used to the higher octane gas (91) while getting rid of the 89 crap?
