BioWare newsletter wrote: It’s a very exciting time at BioWare as today we are announcing one of the most anticipated Massive Multiplayer Role Playing Games (MMORPG), Star Wars™: The Old Republic™.

Star Wars: The Old Republic brings together BioWare and LucasArts, co-creators of one of the most critically acclaimed RPGs Star Wars™: Knights of the Old Republic™ as we plan to bring it to the massively multiplayer online space.

We are thrilled to be announcing the game that will bring the 4th pillar, real emotion and a meaningful story, to the MMORPG space. At BioWare, we’ve always been committed to crafting rich, deep worlds and emotionally engaging stories and characters and our goal for Star Wars: The Old Republic is to bring that vision to the MMORPG genre.

This is only the beginning of our announcements on Star Wars: The Old Republic and we hope you’ll join us for this journey. We can’t wait to share more with you in the coming months as we plan to showcase new game features and story details. Meanwhile, please explore the official Star Wars: The Old Republic website and join our community to learn more about our other upcoming titles at BioWare!

May the Force be with you…
I loved KotR, and I love BioWare. I just hope they do something better than SW:G with this one.

Depends on how well its received by all the SW geeks, errr....fans out there.

Remember when people thought that EQ was the end all, be all of MMORPGs? Things can change but it will take effort on the upstarts part and lack of effort on Blizzard's part.

I think the easiest way for someone to make inroads to the MMORPG realm is to start making them for the various consoles. While Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures hasn't been the success it was hoped it would be on the PC there are still high hopes for it when it gets released on the 360 in 2009. I'd love to see The Old Republic make its way to consoles and if anyone can do it its Bioware. I'm still holding out hope for True Fantasy Live Online getting resurrected by Level 5 sometime in the not too distant future. Its probably the Xbox title I most regret getting cancelled.

Star Wars online failed horribly but i have faith in Bioware that they can make an amazing game. KOTOR 1 and 2 were great games, im hoping it will be like KOTOR but with an infinite replay value.

if any company can support lots of players and have good servers and a mostly bug free game i think they can compete with Blizzard

I really don't see why they're making a big deal out of storytelling in an MMO. MMOs are not good stages for storytelling. You can't have a thousand players all at different major points in a plotline and still interacting in the same world.
