Ok, I have two questions... Got a 90 Nissan Stanza (m/t, ka24e) undergoing some serious work....

Question #1: Did some searching on p/s pump on the forums.. apparently odd for them to go out... this weekend, I put in a new rack/pinion... after running it, it started making a whining/grinding noise when turning left, coming from pump area... possible air in system? or could my p/s pump have decided to take a dump now that a new rack is installed.. Gonna check belt later since I did take it off and replace the belts as well... seems to turn fine, no jerking, etc.. just grinding like crazy especially on left hard turn... and how hard is it to replace this thing, if it comes to that.. I can't even see the thing... it sits right up against the tire wheel/firewall.

Question #2: Got a grinding noise in front end, right side... This has been going on for a couple of weeks... progressively gotten worse... it is a grinding/rotating sound which seems to be coming from right side.. it is directly proportionate to the rotation of the tire while driving. (this has been hard to check by myself.. gotta find someone who can drive a stick and run it with the front tires off the ground). It progressively gets worse from 15-55 mph and seems to taper off but still evident at higher speeds. Revving/nuetral, etc does not effect it.. it is specific to the rotation of the tire... since being a front wheel drive, manual transmission, I am assuming a possible output shaft bearing.. or perhaps an inner wheel bearing in the spindle that I am not aware of??? can't think of anything else it could be. Does not effect overall driving of car, but does have some shake in front end (had front end alignment done yesterday, but still shimmies a bit, tires could be out of rotation too).

As far as items replaced in conjunction with these issues: new rack/pinion, tie rod ends, brakes, and rotors.

Any tips, tricks, hint would be greatly appreciated... I swear by the time I finish with this car, I will be a Stanza Expert!

Thanks,T

P/s jack the car up off the ground and rotate the steering wheel from lock to lock 20 times with the car off. then repeat with car on. Nosie should disapate if its air. If not its likely the pump.

Bearing noise. While the car is still in the air and the car is not running. Grab your tire at the top and bottom and try to rock it in and out. The tire should have no movement in this position. If it does you have a worn out wheel bearing in the spindle hub. It is a pressed unit and requires the use of special equipment to remove it. This would be the source of your noise and likely the vibration your getting.

Thanks for the input.. I did manage to clear the p/s noise.. seems to be ok now..

However, I checked the front end noise with tires off the ground had someone 'drive' it... the noise is definitely in the drive axle. There is no play in the spindle area and the noise is coming from the transmission. The tire will catch or hesitate at low speeds like a bearing is causing it to stop rotating for a second then catching, or perhaps the splines on the axle is skipping.. definitely coming from transmission and not tire end. Sounds horrible. I parked it and am subjected to driving the gas guzzling explorer in the meantime lol. When I get time, gonna pull the axle out and take a look at the end.. one thing I did notice is excessive oil, dirt, etc around that area of the seal to the transmission. My transmission was extremely low on fluid (added almost 3 quarts the other day and found it odd for a manual transmission to get that low on oil). The driving had gotten worse and the whole car shakes.. I can watch the tire and axle shake while its in gear moving... pretty bad too. Question now is... is that bearing (if so bad) pressed in or is it fairly simple to pull out (with a bearing puller) if I can even get my hands in there to it?

Never a dull moment... the blower relay also went out today... fried it lol... gotta get a new relay on top of that... Its Murphy's Law when it comes to me and cars lol... If it can go wrong, it will.... but its all a learning experience for me
