I have a 2011 M56x. I have 35k miles on it. What is your opinion on standard vs. synthetic oil?

If you wanna keep the car running amazing all the time you own it, I would always use synthetic oil over anything. and if your looking for a really good oil Amsoil is the best out there. PM me if you would want some amsoil I am a dealer.

I agree, if I buy a car it gets synthetic only, my leased cars getnwhatever the dealer uses since I return the car a some point. I love using synthetic and swore you could feel the smoother running engine at cold startup.

Synthetic here too. I've been using M-1 since its inception. But there is some data that it is more wise to "break in" a motor on dino oil. Anyone have any facts to support this?

I've read the same claiming dino oil will help scrub the parts smooth... then switch to synthetic after a couple oil changes.
There's also some info about the difference in how much seals/gaskets swell up between dino and synthetic.
I just use regular oil every 3k miles... but only because I'm topping off the oil every 1,500 miles anyway.

Hey Infinm3506, since you are an Amsoil dealer... Do we need to use the AMSOIL Slip-Lock™ friction modifier additive when using Amsoil 75W-90 Severe Gear® Synthetic Extreme Pressure Lubricant (SVG) in our differentials (AWD specifically)? They say it's for limited slip differentials only, but I can't find any info about m35x differentials

You don't have to use it but it does prolong the life of the gears in the Limited Slip Differentials. I don't know if the differentials are limited slip in the M35x.But don't quote me on that.

THX buddy, I guess I'll just use the oil without slip-lock, and if i'll get weird noises i'll add it later on.

I always use Synthetic, however, since I have never gotten a car brand new, here is what my process usually was:

1a) Run Castrol GTX dino/non-synthetic oil (or other top brand like Mobil) for the first couple thousand miles of ownership.
1b) Perform a treatment (or two depending on mileage) of Auto-Rx to prepare the car for the switch to synthetic
2) After necessary process of Auto-Rx, switch to Synthetic.

The whole process takes about 7kmi.

I initially used Amsoil in my Maxima and then on the M I started with Amsoil, they were out of stock one day so I made the switch to Mobil 1 Full Synthetic.

Dino (conventional) oil I did every 3k and Mobile 1 I do every 5k. I could easily go 10k but I have a heavy foot and the oil is dark at 5k so I feel like that is a good point for me to change it. If you do mostly highway and drive easy, you can definitely get 10-15k out of synthetic.

Synthetic here too. Only issue I've come across, and had this with my Altima, is that not all oils are the same. Amsoil was fantastic in my Altima and got rid of the VQ35 oil burning issue. In the VK45 it hasn't made much of a difference. Need to do an oil change soon and going to try Royal Purple this time to see how it does. So far tried Amsoil, Pennzoil Platinum, and Castrol Edge and Castrol has had the least amount of oil burning in my set up.

Its not the oil, you need to get an oil catch with a filter and it will stop your burning oil probelm

Im pretty sure the oil catch filter will just stop the oil from going into the engine, it is still going to be caught there and require draining every few weeks or so and you will still lose the oil. It just wont be burned is the thing.
And the brand, weight, and type of oil you use can definitely stop the oil burning issue. Many people on these forums have fixed the issue with a different brand of oil.
