I am currently about to finally start the full rebuild of my RB20. In the end it will be bored for larger pistions and stroked using rb26 N1 crank and rods making total displament 2.4L Also already have a custom fab intake mani and custom fab top my turbo mani for the new turbo im putting in. Its getting bigger injectors and head work valve train replacment, etc. Basically i'm doing everything my self minus the things that a machine shop will have the tools for.

Question here is Ive been doing a lot of research on standalone ECU systems for my set up. Realitiy is it seems people are in the AEM boat or the Haltech boat. from what it seems they are quite similar. I would like to know from people that have experience with either system what their opinions are on the system they use. Just some additional information NOS is a possiblity down the road and I really want the ability to set up anti-lag and other system profile features. Also do either of these systems have the ability to save multiple map tunes and be able to switch between them on the fly? Ive done about as much reading about these two systems as i can and I suppose id like some real life feedback from users. Thanks in advance

I haven't bought one yet but will be in about 2 months. I'm going with the haltech after my research and talking with my dyno guy. He's familiar with it and prefers it over the AEM. Not much but if you'll be getting tuning done maybe talk to your guy and see what he says?
Cheers!

ok cool thanks for the input. also @additcted My guy swears my the AEM and uses it on pretty much all his builds. He says haltech is real good too, but he said getting support stateside is kinda a pain and not as many tuners are as familiar with their software. But they both look like they would be more than enough for what im trying to do, is just wanted to know a lil more about reliability and overall quality. It seems one feature that the AEM has that the Hal does not is a nitro controller. Im not saying that I wanna NOS my car up but it would be there if i ever got ya know. . . .a lil curious

Ok that's interesting. I'm up in Canada, when the time came for me to buy one I was going to call up the guys at Specialty Z or Z1 about it. I won't have nitro in mine but meth is a possibility for sure! I know I will be picking up an Acer tablet and installing it in my glove box to use as the computer to control the Haltech, there's a guy with a twin turbo viper here that has that setup with the aem.

Yea Ive heard about some of the projects your talking about. Very badass cars indeed. I am very familliar with the twin turbo viper since we have Hennessy Performance down south of me in Huston. They do some crazy stuff. I even called them and asked what they would use and they said that they have experience with both, but it seems that the AEM is by far the most popular choice in "import tuner" cars, as they put it. Apparently the level to which you can tune and tweak the AEM is pretty outstanding, plus Ive heard that the software interface is very user friendly, and supposedly the sensors that you can use as replacements are very high quality and very accurate. My dilemma remains that Ive just seen so many amazing cars that use Haltech, and one of the primer RB specialists in the world (located in New Zealand i think) is a big fan of them, so I wonder if RB's just really like being handled by a Haltech? On the other hand my mechanic in Dallas who is defiantly the pro and master of the RB engine in this area says that I should do the AEM? I dunno what im gonna do lol.

Well on my opinion, and that only a mildly educated one, I would say take the aem if that is what your tuner is most familiar with. He is the one that will be either working or fighting with it. Makes it easier on him if he's more familiar with a system. I know that swayed me with the haltech as I was originally looking at aem. And like you said, a lot of good cars are using the haltech too!
Let us know what you decide on!

Edit: I will be running a map sensor and an electric fan. I will also be getting the dual wideband, intake temp sensor, boost solenoid, and the map sensor they offer (gm sensor) as extra options when I get the haltech, of that matters.

There's also Vipec too! Talk to whoever is tuning it and see what they like best.
