I don't have any experience working with them, but I know that some people use Haltech's so maybe start searching on that.

a street legal race car. and a standalone ecu would make it easier for swapping the vg30dett in my project.

I mean how far are you trying to go with the mods? If you just want an easily programmable ECU but wont need to add extra inputs and outputs then the cheapest way to go is the NISTUNE, its fairly versatile and a hell of a lot cheaper than all true standalones. But if you need versatility of running additional inputs or needing programmable controls unavailable in the factory units code than you'll have to go haltech or megasquirt. I can't be of much help there, I've never had the pleasure of working with a standalone as the factory unit has always been enough for me.

well I haven't exactly decided what to do with it as far as mods go other then a fmic, intake and exhaust mods. I'd just thought going with a standalone would be better then spending 100s of hours wiring all the computers from a z32 into my project.

You're using the VG30DETT outside of the Z32? You should chat with this guy: vg30-in-sandrail-won-t-start-please-help-t578398.html

yeah thats why I'm considering a standalone instead of a stock ecu. so theres no need to deal with an extra 50 pounds of computers and wiring.
