How this one go about with a standalone and not using a maf?

Use a standalone that's speed density based (MAP sensor instead of MAF sensor)

AEM has the option to run MAP.

Yeah, weird how standalones use MAP sensors huh? Why cant car companies just use them to make OUR lives easier? What were they thinking? :)

MAP sensors are the shiznit by the way, in my opinion

Because Mass Air is a more accurate method of measuring the incoming air. The best solution, IMO, is a huge MAF meter, like they make for the 5.0's and stuff. Lots of cars did come with MAP systems from the factory BTW. Some TPI camaros, early 5.0's (pre 89), etc. Factory MAP systems suck, because they can't deal with cam changes (Typically).

MAP sensors can not compensate for a change in volumetric efficiency. The tuning maps are based on known VE for the motor. It is accurate for a given set-up, but like Mikel said, change the cams, and the manifold pressure may be different for the same airflow. It's usually not a huge deal, but if you get wild enough cams, the car may have a hard time even with idle.
