hey there, i am fairly new to this site. I've been reading different threads for the last month or two, but i'm just starting to write stuff. I had a question to ask, and before asking it, i decided to use the search button for fear of being critized for not having used it before i post. Anyways, what exactly is a stand alone system. I've been trying to figure out what electronics would be best for tuning the sr20det and many people have said certain ones would work ok, but one's best bet is a "stand alone system". what is it?? Also, is this related to the feature of having a monitor inside the car to watch the vitals instead of needing 5 different guages. if not, what is that system. someone help me out. thanx :help

it is a "stand alone" Engine control system for timing and fuel maps. it basically takes the place of your ECU and is completely tuneable.

Examples are SDS, AEM, Haltec E6K, etc.

so this would be similar to having your ecu reprogramed or a chip put in it, with the exception that it can be varied and programed more than one time?

yeah kinda except it completely replaces the ECU's function of engine control.

ok, well, i am ordering an sr20det for my 97 240sx next month and having it installed at secret services in tampa, fl. As i begin increasing boost and opening the exhaust and down the road eventually going to a larger turbo set up, am i going to need one of these. For now, i will be installing an exhaust system, boost controller, fmic, possibly new manifolds in about 4-6 months once i save up again, what electronics would be best so i dont risk my engines life.

you don't need to install multiple manifolds ;-P

I'm gonna give him the benefit of the doubt and believe that he was talking about a new intake manifold and a tube-style exhaust manifold.

At least, I hope so.

charlotte240 hit it right on, yea, thats what i was refering to. I understand that the more you open up the air the more fuel you're going to need to mix with it to keep the engine with a good balance of air/fuel. Is there a controller that would take care of this on its own, or one i could purchase that would allow me to tune it. Examples would be greatly appreciated. By the way, the 240 family seems to be to friendly, anytime i've asked a question so far all i get is good answers, not remarks that make me feel stupid. Sorry, just had to throw that in, thanks guys!

Well I have the SDS engine management system and it is one of the easiest systems to tune, very user friendly and has a crapload of features as well. Wiring should be left up to the pros though, that is for sure :D
