My 84 720 pick up starts and runs just fine until I put it in gear then it dies immediately. Changed coils, checked vacuum lines, changed torque converter. Any ideas?

Does it only happen when the engine is cold or at all times?

Happens every time. Can rev it up and quickly get to neutral but then it stalls when shifted into drive.

Does it jolt the car hard, like the torque converter is already locked up?

What I meant specifically is what happens after you leave the car in neutral for like 10 minutes as it warms up, and then shift it into gear?

Hot or cold it starts, runs, idles, accelerates in park or neutral and stalls when shifted into reverse or drive,

What's the rpm of the engine in neutral at idle, cold and warmed up?

No tach but stalls at normal idle or revved up.

I'd start with the simple stuff like checking the timing and trying to adjust the carb for optimal fuel/air mixture.

I don't understand what you mean by that. Clarify please?

I mean that when I shift from park to reverse or very quickly bypass reverse and shift into park the engine stalls out whether I'm letting it idle normally or giving it more gas. I think something is going wrong in the transmission.
