So, after shopping for about 6 months for the perfect J30, I finally found one, and bought it after a superb test drive for what I thought was a lovely price.

Then it died three times on the way home!

It only does it at very low speeds, or when stopped at a light. The engine stops and all the dash lights come on. It usually will start just fine, but it dies quickly thereafter. We were taking it to the shop, about 3 days after we bought it, and it died in a busy intersection and wouldn't come back on long enough to even get it into drive... we had to have it towed away.

Now, I've read these forums, and I know a couple of people have had a similar issue, and it was usually the MAF (Mass Air Flow Sensor). However, the people I bought it from had service records, and they just had the MAF replaced in 2008. Additionally, our mechanic now (who granted is by no means a Nissan or Infiniti Specialist) said (I think) that they checked the MAF as per our recommendation and found nothing wrong with it. Also, they said there were no error codes in the self-diagnostics. The mechanic has only actually gotten it to die at all on one of three test drives, and they've had it for like 3 weeks. I figured I'd give him another week, then take it to a Nissan specialist. Unless you guys have any suggestions?

Have your mechanic read these. Could be as simple as removing and cleaning a few parts, checking the timing and adjusting the idle speed with the engine fully warmed up, the transmission in Drive and stopped with your foot on the brake pedal. Also check to see when the timing belt was last changed.

If your mechanic is still stumped, I would contact someone from here:

I believe there are 3 Z clubs in Oregon. The 300zx and J have the same engine. I'm sure someone will be able to refer you to a reputable independent who has intimate familiarity the J's engine in your area.
