I have 2 problems I'm hoping someone can help me with. They are with my 90 se. 1. Whenever I come to a stop pressing the brake and the clutch, the tach drops all the way down and the car studders and often stalls. Gets worse if I was just accellerating before i breaked. 2. I have a fluid leak that I can't pinpoint. Even after Gunking the engine the oil gets sprayed around te whole engine bay by the fan or belt. The leak is slow but I see no difference in any of the fluid levels over the past 2-3 months. Also there is a squeal when I turn the wheel which seems to be related. (it only squeals on right turns). Thanks for any info you have to share.

OK, does the idle return to normal if you release the brake pedal? If you rev the engine a bit, does the idle return to normal? Need some more info...

It's engine oil, right? The only thing I can think of is that somewhere on the front of the engine, you've got a leak (I know that really helps, doesn't it :D). Dealers can put some luminescent (sp?) crap into your oil and then after driving around for a while, track it with a black light...you may want to get this done if the leak is severe.

Also there is a squeal when I turn the wheel which seems to be related. (it only squeals on right turns).

:thinker Loose belt on the p/s pump? How do you know it's related? If it is, then it may be p/s fluid that spraying all over the engine bay...can you confirm the fluid type?

John is probably correct here. My 90 se is having the same power steering issues. I am leaking fluid out the top (probably need a new cap) and the belt is getting frayed. This issue should be unrelated to your others with eception of the possible fluid contamination.

hey people--on my 90 i had the exact same problems.--on the reservoir, check the line where it attaches to the nipple on the bottom of the reservoir. mine was split from age, and leaking. i trimmed the bad part off the line and reattached.this part wasn't as fun--coughing up 120.00 for a new p/s pump because the bearing behind the pulley was worn out, hence leaking fluid directly from the front of the pump body, and finally being slung all about the engine bay by aforesaid p/s pulley. Worth checking out

Thank- you guys for your input. First, John, yes the car idles smoothly at about 700 rpm at all other times just as it always has. The rpms drop down, it studders or stalls then it goes right back to normal until I stop again. I cannot confirm the oil type, just that its not transmission fluid. The belt is fairly new and in good shape and not loose......I believe it squeals from getting wet with the oil that sprays on it. I checked today and no new oil has sprayed up and it did not squeal all day. On the days I hear the noise I also see new spray marks.

Neil, I checked the nipple by the resevoir, it is ok, no evidence of leaking. It sounds like you may have had the same problem. Did you change the pump yourself? If so, how difficult was it. Did you need to get the car higher than just up on a jack? Also where is the pump located in the engine bay? $120 sounds cheap for a pump, where did you get it? Surely not a Nissan dealer.

Thanks again guys, you've been very helpful
