SSR wheels apparently prone to cracking?

I just ordered a used set of SSR Integral A2's 16x7's, and I was chatting online with one of my DSM friends that told me they crack on a regular basis during track days for the Bimmer guys who love to run them so much.

Now i'm worried, I got these wheels for an excellent price, and in hard to find offset (+32) for 4-lug. He told me i'll be ok as long as i don't go track racing (autoxing doesn't count apparently).

What have you guys heard? And supposedly it's all SSR designs, not a specific line. I was always under the impression they were strong rims.

my guess would be you only have to worry about them on the "track" because when on the track youre curbing them...and curbing wheels is probably 10x worse than any other abuse you would see in the kind of racing we do

Well, yes, a lot of stress is put on rims during circuit runs, but for them to have fissure cracks in them is better than all-out-wheel-failure. Nonetheless, i hear even Rota themselves have made vast improvements in the years past, with the whole Sub-zero rim fiasco.

Anybody have some first-hand accounts?

Wait wait.. it's a rare thing to see that many cracks in the same wheel. Some operator kept airing up the tire, driving, losing air.. airing up, driving, losing air... and so on. That wheel was dangerous at the first sign of the first crack, but I have seen every kind of wheel barrel form a crack. Never seen a trend in this type of crack because generally, it's from an impact and a hard enough hit will kill any wheel.

What we see above are impact breaks. The tire was probably shiet after the first incident, then the owner pushes on...

You go off-track once with any wheel and it can fail.

Very abusive situation, and who knows how many times he went off course.

I have run a variety of SSR wheels for years and have had zero problems. Great wheels. Don't worry about it

Thanks! That takes a load off of my mind and the fact i got a really excellent price for these rims, i can't wait to get them in and throw some tires on 'em. My DSM friend exaggerates a lot, he told me as long as i don't go track racing i'll be okay. So thanks again for the input guys.

Specs are mentioned in my first post, but to reiterate: 16x7 +32 offset and 16lbs a piece.

Turtle: No love for me from Team Dynamics apparently, i ordered Pro Race 2's in 16x7+30 in Feb. they were supposedly going to be in transit from the UK, then I call to confirm if they came at the beginning of April, and Don Kane tells me they weren't made despite the fact they ordered them. He gave me the option of going with other wheels, but besides the Pro Race 2's i only had 17" or 15" to choose from. Which i didn't want. So i found these instead, and they're cheaper than what the Team Dynamics were going to cost. So not too shabby i think. I may even paint them dark bronze (since they were cheap enough)

Hey no problem. When I have some extra money I'm going to pick up a set of SSR Professor SP1's for my Z. Black with the polished lip. Has 4.25" of lip in the back. 18x8.5 up front and 18x10.5 out back

Sadly that probably won't be for like two years though.

Hm, sucks that Team Dynamics did that to you. I agree that their sizing is kind of weird. I did find that they make a 17x8 +20, but while their smaller wheels like the 15x7 are very light, the 17x8 wasnt very light at all.

Yeah, that's pretty much my biggest problem with 17's, they look like wagon wheels, and you don't shed as much weight like you would with a 15 or 16" rim even if they are 'lightweight' in comparison to other 17" rims. That and i like the idea of running on 50 sidewalls over 45, the roads here can be vicious depending on where you are, so 50's are an extra cushion of safety. (if i can see the obstacle, i avoid it, but there are times when you can't y' know )

I agree, but not coupes, for some reason i look at my car and see a big white boat, my 15" alloys looks so teeny tiny, but 16s some just right.

Only cracked SSR I have seen hit a curb at 100 mph+ on track day.

You will be fine. Chat rooms are not a great source of valid information.

I wonder if that is the same pic from some dude who bought a used set of rims cracked all over just like that one on the Lexus forums in Cali. The guy was really pissed and the wheel was some JDM forged variety with cracks all over just like the pic above.
