Hey guys I just got my sr in. I'm using a KA transmission with an SR20 bellhousing... anyway.. I go to roll my car forward and it won't go.. I check to make sure my ebrake is down and the gear is neutral and it is.... i go to push again and it wont go.. I see the motor moving and it's acting like it's in gear! I get my rachet and go to turn the crank pulley and the car moves forward! When I turn the crank it moves forward... I have no idea what is wrong here.. the shifter moves back and forth perfectly like it's in neutral .. so can anyone tell me why it's still in gear? I installed a new clutch and everything, I am pretty sure I did everything right. I swapped the bellhousing and stuff.. I'm kinda worried! Please help me!

well, here's some more info... I went out to check it again and I can shift into 1st , 2nd and 5th I can not get it into 3rd or 4th. I had a friend do a check and when I depress the clutch pedal, he could freely turn the engine over by hand.. but when turned over by hand without clutch depressed, (transmission supposively in neutral) it goes forward and is in gear ( I can move the shifter from side to side just like in neutral position but it's still in gear somehow! AH, I know someone has an idea!

sounds like you got the same problem the rest of us had - You have to pull the transmission agin

If its in 1-3-5 - then you gotta pull the rear off the transmission- if its in 2-4-R - you gotta pull the front cover off.

If its in 1-3-5 the rods will be pulled torwards the rear of the transmission and cant be pushed back into place from the front cover.

If its in 2-4-R the rods will be pushed out torwards the front of the transmission and can be pushed back into place via the front cover.

Either way go ahead and get a front cover gasket - oil seal and a transmission rear oil seal and some RTV - reseal the rear of the transmission - and replace oil seals a gasket

I know it sux but you gotta do it its the only way to fix this!

JGS, thank you for giving me this info... I can only get mine to go into 1,2, and 5.. 3 and 4 wont go and neither will R. I guess i'm gona pull it off either way.. but do you know what I should be looking for... ?

edit : I went outside and torqued the shifter down and put the shift knob on... I can get it in all gears but I have to jerk and kinda hit them into gear (I have no oil in transmission yet) but even with that done.. my car is still in gear.. I put it in neutral and try to push the car forward and it wont go.. I pull it from the radiator support and see the crank pulley moving.. ahh, !

Yeah man sorry to hear this - but that quite weird that it will go in all gears but not come out of gear.

It is possable for the shifter rod to come out of the forks on the other rods - which would take alot to do - but thats is where I would check first - you will have to pull the transmission and pull off the rear of the transmission to access the rods and then you will fully understand what Im talking about and how the shifter actully works too!I will lok for pix to see if I have any

Oh sweet, that's nice to see.. i'm a lady if that matters ;-P For some reason i'm a female that actually has a part in my brain that is intrigued by moving parts and machines (especially engines) hehe.. It will be a good learning experience and I can smell like gear oil while i'm doing it ( love that smell for some reason).I saw a portion in the FSM that instructs you to put all forks in neutral position before installing the rear end on the trans. So I'll do my absolute best to take pictures when I find what is wrong with the shift rods and let you guys see. I got a digital camera for christmas and something is wrong with it already.. the lens wont come out. anyway, thank you for the pic and help!

ok, yesterday I got the transmission off, I removed the front cover and took a picture of the three rods showing through. Then I got my shifter and shifted EASILY through 1-5 and watched each of the rods go forward and back... I put the front cover back on and tried again, same thing, easy shifting... (????)

now I went back to the car and got my piece of driveshaft... ( i unbolted it where the U joint is..) and I put it in the back of the transmission... ok I started turning the driveshaft and I heard it was turning the input shaft ... (is that right?) Well, I put it in gear and then i felt some tension, like it was turning gears (plus I Heard gears turning inside too heh) So, I just don't know what to think now... could it be my clutch? I am not able to run it all inside my head (workings of clutch and transmission) so I just don't understand what could be wrong.. what is making the connection to the engine?(When I turn the crank .. the car moves forward.the wheels turn) Argh.. I am going to climb under the car and stick my alignment tool in to make sure the pilot bearing isn't too tight... I mean ... I replaced it with one from a 93 sentra SE-R.. and it fit in just fine and was the same size as the last one... this was my first time installing a clutch and i believe i did it correctly.. it's not hard at all... i'll take some more pictures.. if you could give me any ideas or things to look for that would be beautiful!

no I did something or I wasn't checking the input shaft but now it turns freely and does not move the driveshaft... so i think i'm going to be ok... hah..I worked myself up over nothing .. I have a short shifter in so the gears are so close I guess I just confused myself haha.

Yeah it all looks correct and sound correct from what you say?

you can still shift gears with clutch pedal while car is not under load.

short shifters are a bit harder to get in gear than a stock shifter - but not really that different.
