i'm not sure if this is the right forum, but here goes anyways:

on a diff forum, there was a discussion about the sr20ve in a 240sx.i know they swapped one into a usdm g20, but thats easy, compared to this. anyone know if its been done? it was figured out that you'd need to us a rwd sr block, with a fwd head and some fab work for manifolds and such, and probobly a stand alone for the timing or putting a hole in the firewall

any other input or info, or if anyone's done this?

To my knowlege, no it has not been done yet (and i have searched alot). It would be a very challenging swap. First, the head does not simply bolt on (not entirely sure, when comparing FWD and RWD block, from what i could tell all the water and oil passages were the same, this is just what i have heard). Second, the distributer will be hitting the fire wall, so you have to cut the fire wall or get rid of the distributer. Third, you need a standalone engine management system to make it run. Fourth, VE parts are expensive and rare, ontop of having to buy a RWD sr20de block and transmission (if your going NA).

I know it could be done, i have seen a FWD GTiR head on a RWD DET block. In the article, all the owner would say is "its not a bolt on affair".

what would be the advantage that makes the swap worth this time and effort

Variable cam profiles, kind of like vtec (only valve lift though), it keeps your car civil at low rpms (1-4000) and alows you to run a better suited cam profile for the track on upper rpms (4000-7500). Of course you can set the VVL solinoid to switch between cam profiles at whatever RPM you want. The SR20VET makes 280hp and alot of torque (used as a SUV motor belive it or not), only they cost over $10,000 so it is just a tad cheaper to make your own turbo VE :D

sr20vet? nice, isnt that in the S15 though? or does that engine only have one cam that switches? waht makes is worth the effort, at least in NA form is that it makes your car powerful, but not too powerful, think about the 240sx becoming nissan's s2000

Hey, J-Spec Tuner, when you said something about the suv, were you talking about the xtrail? Those things are soooo rare to find in turbo form, and even in japan, the parts are cheap, but difficult to come by. I've talked to a couple people who've used xtrail pistons in their silvias. . . They said that the pistons are an improvent over the stock ones, but they took way too long to get.If the situation is like that in Japan, Imagine what it would be like in the States. Besides, it's probably just as cheaper just to use the NA VE head and go from there. Yea, there will be headaches involving engine mgt, but IF you've got the patience and/or a lot of money, it would be a very cool conversion.

Interesting article on the X-Trail & the SR20VET.

<might not be relevant to your SR20VE conversation??>

The SR20VET only comes on the top trim Xtrail in japan. VVL is not the same as the variable valve timing found on S14 and S15 motors.

A SR20VE conversion for a S13 would be in the same vain as twin turboing the SR20DET, sure it will work, yeah it will make decent power, but in the end its more of a shock thing for when you open the hood.

Although still not cheap, I don't think that it'd be outrageously expensinve if you used the SR16VE head and bolt it up to the SR20DET block (relatively speaking). Again, the engine mgt system will need to be replaced from the stock SR one, but I've actually read about a NX2000 w/ the VE head on the regular SR with a turbo on it. I'm not too sure as to the details since I read it over 3 years ago, but I know it's possible. There are many other ways to improve the lower rpm power w/o resorting to the VE motor, and the headaches associated w/ it. For example, JimWolf is coming out w/ a 2.4 kit (for the SR) that would probably be more effective in bumping up your power levels as well as low-end torque. It'll probably cost just as much, too. ;) If you can make it work, I think that it'll be seet. My question is why are you wanting to do this? Is it for the shock factor or b/c of the drivability? There are many ways to accomplish the same goal, but not all of them are cost effective, nor reasonable. However, if you've got the money to burn, and/or standing out from the crowd means that much to you, this'll do it.

i've seen this thread ALOT on many forums, i heard from so many people that the ve head won't fit on any sr fwd or rwd. yes the sr heads on fwds and rwds swap but the ve's are different, there is slightly different patterns on the block with oil chambers or whatever. plus the compression ratio in the ve's are 11.0:1 , so if you put the head on a 8.5:1 or 9.5:1(n/a) it probly won't run right. now i have heard of north southing an engine or somthing. the spline shafts going into the trans on a fwd are smaller than the rwd, rwd sr has the same size as the ka24 though....don't know about north southing. the loom and ecu from ve would have to be used or a det loom with dis and a jwt comp. maybe..

probly near impossible to do.

i wouldn't just slap a turbo on a ve(11.0:1)either, hell i wouldn't slap a turbo on my sr20de(9.5:1)silviaQ's:D

might as well get an s15 det
