89 240sx se hatch - s14 kouki harness w/ s15 sr20det

just installed a new starter, relay (the one behind the pass. healight) and the ignition switch.

the car wouldn't crank before except at random, but would start. That problem is corrected. Now it will at least crank all the time.

It will crank and run with the ignition key set to run and i supply 12v to the starter.

It will crank and NOT start and run with the ignition key in the start position.

anyone know what might be happening here????

So when you key over to the starter, it won't crank? But will crank when you jump the starter? Is it a converted automatic? Might be a starter inhibit relay issue.

Im unsure if it is an converted auto, i didn't do the swap.. but now i wish i did.

The engine will turn over no matter what, it will turn over and not start with the key. Jumping the starter will start the car.

the starter inhibit relay would cause the starter to be inop right?

Yeah. It sounds like you might have a bad ignition switch that is dropping out voltage when you are cranking. Get a multimeter and start checking the wires at the switch for voltage.
