I was wondering, is there any alternative to the SR20DET transmission? I have a S13 that I think may need a transmission soon but I don't want to go back to a 5spd. Will the S15 or Z33 bolt up?

If you already have an SR, the internals are from the KA are exactly the same, I have read that you can just change the Bellhousing, but I cannot be 100% sure on that.

Yep, you're in Maryland right? so you should be real close to gear box tech (http://www.gearboxtech.com/) my friend got his WRX's transmission rebuilt there and he loves it, he said the guys there are real nice to. They are in Gaithersburg.

What's wrong with doing the 6-speed conversion? I'm trying to go this route, 'cause I topped out my car running with my friends that have Z's and having a 6th gear would have helped a lot in keeping up with them.

Also, for some reason, I think having a 6th gear would help my gas milage a little more when driving at cruising speeds of 75mph or better. Am I right to assume that?

Gas milage is pretty much my motivation of swapping out my transmission at this point.

Who cruises at 75? Your logic fails.

I'm from NYC so I would normally agree with you, but I now live in Orlando, Florida. Down here a lot of the highways I take have a speed limit of 65 and 70mph, and the flow of traffic is usually 75 or better, resulting in a higher cruising speed. It is because of this area's cruising speed that I've lately been tending towards doing the S15 Transmission swap. Does this logic now make sense to you?

The internals are diffent between the KA transmission and the SR. But yes, you can swap bellhousings. The bolt pattern between the sr and ka is different, as are the internals, but the rest of the housing of the transmission is the same. Long story short, swap bellhousings and the transmission will bolt right in same as the stock one.

And the internals are compatible?? Because that would be too easy Id rather not have to buy a full transmission.

the KA and SR trannys share the same internals, the bellhousing is the only difference between the two. gear to gear they are identical. i am currently running a 90 model KA transmission with a swaped SR bellhousing. it takes about all of an hour or two to clean and reassemble everything. very cheaaap way to getting a good SR transmission.
