I recently rebuilt my red top sr20det, I thought I had set the timing chain correct. Now I am starting to doubt my slef. When im @ TDC on cly 1 my cam gears are not at 10 & 12 o'clock. I belive I may be a link or 2 off on the crank gear. Has anyone ever have to re-align the timing chain wile the engine is in the car, and not having to pull the upper oil pan and oil pump?

If I remove cams can i drop the chain a lil to line up the crank gear. I belive I can view it by only removing the lower oil pan. what do you think, here is my view. has anyone tryed this?????

DID You put the GOLD link on the bottom sprocket dimple? If you did then you do not have to worry about anything on the bottom end.

Just Follow Your FSM,Turn that crank until CYLINDER 1 and 4 are at TDC AND the two off color links are exposed, this might take 50 cranks and the MAIN SProcket will line up at about HASH mark #2 with the METAL PIN in the Front of your engine.Actually, here just look at the very bottom of this articlehttp://www.nicoclub.com/articles.php?id=238409

well thats the thing.... I dont belive it is lined up cuz the cams are not in the correct position when I get it to TDC. I have had everything put togather and no start, replace the ignitor chip and CAS , plugs and tested contuinity off coil packs. so its not ignition. Got plenty of fuel. it must be timing.

Ok, since you have your cover off. Take off your chain tensioner and cams...Try just cranking that thing till those 2 links get to the top, and start over.

well, hows your CAS lined up?

CAS was correctly installed. I know the crank is off a few teeth. all I want to know is if someone has had their chain loose enough to skip it a few teeth on the crank. in the manual you have to remove top oil pan and oil pump and i am trying to avoid doing that. and no codes, i kno its weird that its not throin a code. oyea since the oil pump is still on you can be exact on lining the chain with the demple on the sprocket

No, I have never heard of that happening. I have heard of not installing it correctly though.

I have marked the gold link and i can see it since i have remover my bottom oil pan and it is off by about 3 theeth. just still curious about leaving the oil pump on and adjusting the chain to it meet with the mark on the crank. then i will line up the rest.
