Hello,

I am trying to find out what would be involved to get a SR20DET to pass emissions in NOVA. I am considering purchasing a swapped 240 in PA where there are no emissions. I know that the owner still has the charcoal canister but he does not have a cat on the car. Please let me know if anyone has successfully gotten a swapped 240 to pass. I imagine that cars in CA have a similiar problem due to smog tests. I need to know ASAP because I am going to look at this car tomorrow afternoon and it is a 3.5 hour drive. Dont want to buy it if I cant get it legal. I appreciate any help that can be given.

Thanks.

the only thing you can do is go the shady rout and make friends with someone that does inspections.

in NC here 1995 and earlier cars don't have to pass a sniffer test, but they do check to make sure all the emissions equipment is present. having a RB swap, a lot of the emissions stuff we have here wasn't even a part of the engine to begin with (like EGR) so I still have to get the hookup somewhere. I'm guessing the person in PA you are going to see had to do something similar.

I belive that you are probably correct, my only saving grace is I found out that the car in PA did have to have emissions inspection and the guy actually put the EGR and charcoal canister back on to have it inspected. Because the emissions is current the state of VA will waive the inspection for one year. So by this time next year Iwill have to figure out a place that will pass it without looking too hard

SRs never came with EGR. They had an AIV to bypass air into the exhaust to light off the cat at idle. The AIV in a USDM chassis, won't fit because of the steering column. The tube for the AIV contacts the column.

First thing you should do is get a new catalytic converter for it. And then do some checking around in the SR forums. There are many threads asking for help on passing smog, and some of them do contain good info to know. in fact, we have one thread stickied to help with smog legality.

Years ago, there was a member with a swapped vert who posted his emissions numbers for Maryland. If I remember right, NoVA and Maryland are pretty identical in requirement for emissions testing.

I was looking at moving to Reston a while ago, and for emissions, I figured I'd take my chances and see what to do from there on. There are plenty of swapped cars in the NoVA area, so I'm sure they know who to go to or what to do. NoVA emissions aren't too terribly stringent, so it won't be like having to deal with California

Thanks for the information on the set up differnces. I had done some checking on other posts on passing emissions but didnt see any related to NOVA. I believe that with a cat installed I should be able to pass the sniffer test but I havent tried the visual test yet. The actual test is actually pretty stringent as it is done on a dyno with tests at 15 and 25 mph with sampling done at speed and load to that speed. So, it isnt quite as bad as CA but it is getting that way, VA has initiated specific training for the testing personel for identifying non-stock motors in specific vehicles so it is getting harder to get a car to pass. The only experience I have had is with Honda's but most of the swaps I have seen are with USDM motors so this would be my first experience with a JDM motor. I will ask the person that has the car how he got it passed in PA.

I live in pa and my sr passed inspection and emissions no problem at all some counties in pa do not require you to get emissions done but my county does I just took it to the shop ten minutes later they slapped a sticker on it and said have a nice day As long as you have everything I dont think you really should have a problem then again I am running a bone stock sr so when i get my bigger turbo and other parts il let you know if they will pass me dont see why not their pretty cool here or il just take it to the shady place down the road they will pass anything I hear.

grmreapr...punctuation is very handy in making posts legible

I didn't realize that VA was getting that way. Glad I live in the southwest where we don't care what we do to our cars. Somehow, I have a feeling that you will find most testing places up north to not give much of a crap as you would be lead to believe.

I hope you are right, I know a couple of places in the rural part of the county where I doubt I will have a problem, but I do know a couple of guy that had had speed shops do some work have had problems. I dont know exactly what thier setups were so I have nothing to compare to. I am supposed to pick the car up this comming weekend if all is good and should have it tested the middle of the following week so i will let you guys know how I did if the DMV doesnt just give me a waiver for the first year since the one I am looking at has passed a PA emissions.

shouldn't be too stringint, just get in with the local car clubs and see who you can talk to about getting it thrown through. I had my car (no exhaust, straight piped) just sent on through e-check here in Ohio for $50 (i think it was supposed to be $35, but the owner let me slide w/o an inspection for an extra 15 under the table). It's all about connections. BTW, having the stock exhaust put back on still woudn't have helped me pass emissions

I tried about 6 times to get my SR to pass emissions down here in arizona. Hell no, didnt even get close. and it was even worse after i tryed to recirculate the BOV and even getting it tuned with my SAFCII didnt work got me closer but no dice. Thank god for Shady McGrady ways to get around passing emissons with an SR ( I just registered my car somewhere where there was no emmisions )
