Ok so I did the research a year or so ago (before I had a 240sx) and found that I could get an sr20det complete with transmission and all oem turbo components and basically everything you need to do the swap to jdm oem specs for about $1500 diy. But I keep hearing that drifting has inflated the price of the SR and how expensive they are and stuff...

Who has done a swap recently and how much did it cost you? where did you get the engine from? Tiger Japanese still has them for pretty cheap... are they a good place to buy from? How does shipping work? I live in a small town so I cant just walk into an import tuning shop and tell them to pull an SR off the shelf for me. Most shops around here just make 80s american muscle cars

No on tiger japanese. Ive delt with them before, SR swap had a bad turbo trans grinded, they dont include the ignitor chip or maf. They swapped out the trans but told me they dont get mafs or ignitors from their source in japan. Also sent me a rb20 trans for my rb25, and they told me thats the "american version" of the 25 trans, finally got the right trans from them after 3 months of arguing. Not worth the hassle. Buy from one of our sponsors here. Yes it may be a little more but you get what you pay for.

Cost me about $3500 with a lot of fake parts from ebay... I bought a 98 blacktop s13 SR20 from JDMofMiami for $2000 shipped (STEAL OF A DEAL) and it was fresh with a nismo coppermix clutch and some other goodies...

CXRacing parts are cheap and good stuff, so look around but youll spend about $3000-4000 to do a nice swap...

If you just want a turbo'd motor. Why not get a CA18DET. Much cheaper than the SR, plus it doesnt have any drift tax attached to it.

Your best bet is to buy a car that already has the swap installed. If you can manage to get a clean one, that is. Its almost always the cheapest way.

keep it oem

lets seecar $5000paint $3000clip $3500intercooler, clutch, radiator, shroud, wiring $1500wheels $1000brakes $500differential $500misc. $500

its about 15k if you do everything right to make it like an oem jdm would be minus the obvious.

Elite JDM is the only place I would get a JDM motor from. I am friends with the owner and he's a stand up guy with only the best stuff.

Got mine from JDM Hookup here in St. Louis. Definitely recommend them. Motor started with no problems first time I tried to crank it. cost about $3500 total for the whole swap.

YES! I am very seriously considering this. I basically have come to the conclusion that if I can get a good deal on an SR20 I will buy it... but I think with the "drift tax" good deals on an SR are a thing of the past. And I wont buy an s13 with an already swapped motor... I want the experience and pride of doing it myself.

Nali, how much did you spend on your CA swap? How much do you think I would spend on just a good honest to god oem CA18DET swap?

CAs are cheap if you find a good importer. Ranging from about 800 - 2000 for a full motor with everything you need to install.

The install itself is a weekend at most. The CA uses the same motor mounts as the KA, also the same radiator.

Pretty much everyone rebuilds their CAs at some point, and eventually upgrades the intercooler, injectors(RX7 injectors work) and Turbo most get the turbo outta the S15.

Minus the drift tax i think the CA18DET is better bang for buck than the SR20.

P.S I dont even know how much ive spent at this point. But im contemplating building a CA18DERT, which will obviously kill my bank account.

why not save the time and money and get a 180sx or silvia front clip? cuz they come with everything you need and only costs about 2500 including shipping, and you get to see the exact way to set it up... like a parts car, just half of one

I got my SR from Jen-online.com for $2100 but with all new parts outside of the block and the cost of the car I spent about $10k, and I need another $1k to be satisfied. Reliability>cost

Dont forget about KA-T. My setup is simple and cost me less then 1000 dollars for everything. I have done SR, CA, RB, and now KA. By far the KA has been best bang for the buck.

I have definitely thought about ka-t. If I did do a ka-t I would want to build it out of parts that I could put on an sr20 or ca18 once I had the money for a swap. As a whole I just dont like the ka. I realize that in a turbo application it can be quite formidable... but I am still just not a huge fan. I know eventually I want an sr or ca, so Im afraid to waste money on ka-t.

Hey Nali... whats ca18dert?

I also dont want to do ebay parts... can ka-t be done for under 1k without using ebay parts? maybe make 180 to 200hp at the wheels? With future potential for more power?

hey bro. if you are serious about going with the sr20 swap you really want to do it right. I got a full sr20det motor a few months ago from Osaka Motors and it was perfect. the turbo was mint no shaft play and the motor it self was wonderful. i picked that up with the transmission which is mint as well for 1800 or 1900 around there. if you are going to upgrade from oem it's obv going to cost you more but for me i got my car and motor for 2500.

I have never heard of this (noobness showing through?) How does shipping work for this kind of deal? I want a chuki front end and 180sx corner lights would be a plus if they came on it...
