Is it possible to swap a SR20DET red top in to a 1990 240SX SE automatic?

I think with the right amount of $$$$ anything can be made posible. But because usually the SR20 comes with transmission then the question is getting it installed right.

Are there any extra steps that need to be taken to put an SR20 into an automatic? Ie, when I'm looking for a car, should I put in the extra effort to get a manual?

Yes, it involves sourcing the parts to change it into a manual. It also involves stripping down the dash inside the car to drill and cut holes for the clutch. Also you will need the slave cylinder and lines.

All your doing is a Auto -> Manual conversion and an SR swap at the same time, you could just buy a front clip and use those extra pieces on it instead of sourcing. But Sourcing is cheap too.

i have a 90 HB auto. There were no 5speeds for sale around me so i had to get an auto. You just need to get some extra parts , it only took me one visit to a junkyard to get them.

hahaha,i just sold my 92 auto with 170k miles on it for 2600.mine was probably in alot better condition than what you might get.my interior was very clean, the engine had about 1500 into it(maintanance since i had it for 1 1/2 years), and the exterior was in ok condition with maybe a couple real little dings and spider cracking on the front bumper, but you could only tell real close up.

so maybe you get it for 900,depending on the condition.i hope you get it cheap.i just bought my second one for 2500 with 138k and its a se model.much better than my last.

the blue book value is about 3 g's. the car is in fair condition. it has way too many miles on for its year. and its a old lady selling it. i say about 900.

I just got a 90 240sx 5speed hatchback with 172k on it,only running on 3 cylinders (not that it matters since I'm gunna swap in an engine anyway) and a descent body, just a few easily fixed problems. It has a nice interior too. I got it for 500 bucks, so I think 900 is reasonable for one with a good body.

Getting a front clip won't get you all of the stuff you need. You can use the pedals (which is recommended anyways), you *may* be able to use the interior piece if your clip comes with it (I don't know if there is a variance with the RHD interior piece). You can't use the clutch reservoir and you can't use the clutch lines.

anyone who says that you'll pay $2k is crazy. for a '90 hatchback with that many miles you shouldn't pay more than a thousand no matter how nice the body is. I got my '95 (s14 chassis) with 149k miles for $4200 and it is in beautiful condition. just to let you know.

Well remember that the KBB price is about $4500 for a 1990 240SX. You may not care but the state cares when you have to pay a tax to change registration.
