so ive been having a problem lately. it isnt all the time, but it worries me when i drive the car and have to turn it off somewhere else...

so sometimes i will try and start my car ( 92 s13 FB with s13 redtop sr20det with minimal bolt ons).. all my electronics will light up ( i have greddy bc/tt, gauges new head unit etc) but the starter wont turn over. it doesnt make any clicking noise, and if it doesnt start and i hold the key in the start position you kind of hear a small amount of quiet low slowly turning sound, like it just doesnt have enough juice... and right after jumper cables are hooked up it fires right up and runs great

so i took out my battery and went to kragen and had it tested, because i used the search button and know this topic has been hit before and ussually its the battery, but i had my battery tested and it was 100% charged and is still good.

and the worker there said it might be my starter and that all nissans have a starter relay and that could have gone out...

no clue what to do with this, and like i said it doesnt happen all the time, but i really dont like driving the car somewhere and haveing to worry about it starting when i have to leave..

and people are A-HOLES when it comes to asking for a jump, they will say NO!! all day, even though i have the cables.. :tisk:

well any help is appreciated, thanks

if the starter is trying to turn over slowly, your relay wouldnt be bad. sounds more like a connection issue or the stater. if you want to try swapping your starter relay, search for a thread by me, i have the same car and showed where the relay was. id start with checking connections, and maybe pull your starter and test it.

Mmmm... I don't think your starter is bad. If your battery is at 100% then try cleaning the terminals and the wires that connect to them.

I work at autozone and ive seen this alot, I'm not an expert but in my opinion the relay can not be bad if the starter is moving but if the magnents in the starter motor just like any 12v electric motor are worn out the starter drive will turn slowly but when you go to jump it you send much more amperage to the starter giving a jolt causing it to turn properly. Also does it start when its cold most of the time and not when it's hot which is pretty common after driving for awhile the starter gets hot and wont move but once cooled it starts just fine which is pretty common starter failure. I would check the connections like the others say and take a multimeter and make sure your giting plenty of voltage and amperage to the starter as you try to start it, but I would personaly say it is the starter.

plus easy way to check relay is to put your hand on it as someone trys to start it and you should feal it click, if it clicks the switch inside is working
