If I were you I would take it apart and put it back together again. It sounds like you have somethign lined up wrong. Ti is also possible that your starter is shot, as there are two actions in the starter. One is the motor, which spins the gear, and the other is a electromagnetic system to force the gear out of the housing to meet the flywheel. This is done so the starter does not constantly drag on the fly wheel. If you want to trouble shoot the starter, remover it, and get a set of jumper cables. Clip one side to the chassis of the car and to the body of the starter. Clip the other end to the positive battery terminal and touch it to the contact on the solenoid. You should be able to watch and see if there are any problems.
