Well my starter is giving me Problems... Here goes, First off my started was working only sometimes and began to get worse over time; so I just figured, get it rebuilt so thats what i did. After that it worked beautifully for a couple months but now its doing the exact same thing again. It always starts up in the morning when the motor is cold but, when I go places here and there around town sometimes it will not start, just a slight click noise and then I give it a couple trys and usually will start up but some times it wont and ill have to sit there for 20min till it will.. I dont understand it and was wandering if anybody has had a similar problem!?

Probably what's happening is that the starter is getting heat soaked and the field windings inside the starter are starting to short out. After the starter cools down, the shorts go away and everything is OK until the next time the starter gets hot again.

If the field windings are damaged, the starter is shot.

Your best bet is to buy a new unit.

Well thank you for your advise... Do you think that some kinda heat wrap would temporarily fix the problem or at least prevent damage in the future!?

Heat wrap will not help you here. The majority of the heat is transmitted through metal-to-metal contact where the starter is bolted on.

Ok so if anyone else can answer me this... Is this a common problem with FR Sr motors... or Is it just possible that I got a bag starter....Mind you I have already had it rebuilt once!???

Try to find a heat shield for starters. It will block some of the heat getting to the silenoid.

Touching on an old post: Took the starter apart and took some shims out fixed the problem for a while, but it started to act up again this may (2010) and the price of SR starters went way down so I go one from FRSport.com put that sucker in and all it does it click! click! click! So i slapped the old one back in there with some grease and it at least starts the car! I tested that new one on a bench and it worked fine, but installed on the car it just wont work!

Sounds like I'm too late, but with some research you can buy a KA starter (i think that's right) then put the SR top on it. Much cheaper than the OEM SR ones. As far as the clicking :gotme I know bad connections/cables can do it and have been my #1 culperit in the past. Good lucK!

If you just bought it tell them it is not working under load and you require a working one for your money.

Ok guys im back following up on this post... They would not return it cuz it was installed BASTARDS! :squint: Luckily it wasn't that much money because it wasnt an OEM but an after market Mishimoto starter.

Ok... Still running my tired old starter and well it does start the car intermittently, and will start the car every time with a little finagling... Here is the crazy trick that works every time and im hoping somebody can answer what the issue is here... When the starter just clicks and wont crank over prolly 1/4 of the time, i put the car in gear, get out the car and the rock it back and for and when I hop back in push in the clutch and turn the key it starts right up! :wtf2: what could this be??? A chipped flywheel?

Yes, old thread but have same problem
I have exactly the same problem as you with all the same experiences with replaced and rebuilt starters.
Exact same start up procedure... too.

cheers

PhopsonNY - I have come to the conclusion that my flywheel must be chipped, or damaged in some way; haven pulled it out or replaced it yet though... I will let everybody know when I do!

Cool...
Please post some pics when you do.

I honestly think it is something else because I don't hear the starter click when it does this.
Admittedly it may not be possible from the driving seat, but I would think that I would hear something.

cheers
